Despite the somberness of the usual Autumn/Winter colours, 2017 promises a more creative burst of cheekiness, with splashes of bright shades, interspersed with soft, wearable hairstyles. Here are some of our favourite looks on the runway:
Floating geometric pastel cat-eye
Prabal Gurung’s models sported a geometric ‘floating’ cat-eye in an array of solid shades, ranging from pastel blue to green to navy to orange. The colour is applied above the crease of the eyelid, making it look like a frame that extends subtly outwards. We wouldn’t go as far as to suggest this look for work, but it would definitely work for retro-themed parties for an edgier, but equally trippy effect.
Metallic mermaid ombre ‘hair’-bands
If you don’t have a hairband you like, make one with your own hair, like how they did for Issey Miyake’s Paris Fashion Week 2017 show. Take one section of hair from a side parting, slick it down with a shine-enhancing gel and smooth away any kinks with your fingers. Apply glitter or metallic paint to the top and let dry.
Oversized bow + undone chignon
We love Marchesa’s take on the evergreen chignon, made more striking with a huge velvet bow, perched jauntily on one side. The hair, though shiny, is volumized (best do this on dry, freshly-shampooed locks), haphazardly tied into a semi-undone low bun that looks like it’s on the brink of unraveling.
Statement lips and statement eyes combo
Break all the beauty rules with this look by Zang Toi, which plays up both the eyes and lips. Why should you choose one feature to accentuate? However, that being said, it’s best to keep the blusher to a minimum so that your eye makeup and lipcolour stand out. To keep the outcome sleek, make sure everything is applied with a precise, steady hand with clean lines.
Holographic two-tone texture contrast lips
At Francesca Liberatore, the overall look was chic yet lived-in, made interesting with a holographic violet lip colour in a mix of glossy and matte textures. The top lip is covered liberally in lip gloss, while the bottom lip features a barely-there, semi-matte stain. It’s cool, but for a more wearable option, choose one texture and stick to it throughout.
