Runway roundup SS2016: Add a spring to your step with these understated beauty trends

As we enter the 2nd week of Chinese New Year festivities, let’s also take a break from the reds and oranges and pinks that are commonly seen during this prosperous season. Sometimes, simplicity is best, as it goes a long way without having to scream for attention. We’ve rounded up 5 of our top favourite beauty trends from SS2016 for your reading pleasure:

Neon peepers

Giambattista Valli models sported abstract fluorescent orange eyeshadow, ‘floating’ above the crease and topped with glitter, while Monique Lhuillier was all about a lush green eyeliner with blunt cat-eye edges. Marc Jacobs, on the other hand, went for a grunge-rock reinterpretation with smudged makeup, spider lashes and a dab of cobalt blue on the inner eye corners.

Straight brows, no arch

Rag and Bone, Isabel Marant, Lanvin and Emporio Armani went for a more au naturel look, featuring almost-horizontal brows and pared-down skin. Even though straight brows were said to have been popularised by the K-pop trend, the outcome is more androgynous and less princess-y this time around.

Vampire pouts

The lady is a vamp. Ultra-dark lips aren’t as outlandish as they used to be as people become more open-minded with their choices of lip colours. Cushnie et Ochs’ purple-black won’t look out of place even during the day with minimal eye makeup, and we also like Burberry Prorsum’s similar take on the dark lip stain trend.

Braided beauties

Braids were ‘in’ again at Kristian Aadnevik, with an ethereal 4-strand braid combined with soft, flowy waves. Giles’ version of the milkmaid braid was simple yet practical for girls who don’t like getting hair in their faces; a French braid down each side, secured at the base of the neck – we’re kind of loving how it lets us get away with bad hair days.

Blunt bangs

The blunt cut speaks volumes about one’s personal style. It’s a cross between ‘fashionably grown out’ and ‘too cool to care’, but truth be told, blunt bangs require some effort in pulling off perfectly. Whether super-short like Alexander Wang model Irina Kravchenko or haphazardly chopped-off at Acne, you’ll need an attitude to match and preferably, a RBF (resting bitch face) as well.
