Online Shopping Tips - post office terms

Oct 15, 2008 Author: karenmarie | Filed under: Shop Online, Specials, Tips

Question: What’s the difference between pos laju and pos ekspress?

Pos Ekspress and Pos Laju offer same services. A courier service that will send your parcel right to your doorsteps in one day or a few days depending on the postcode.

Some places, like rural areas might take a little longer to reach so it may not reach within one day of sending. While cities and easier to reach places will get their parcels earlier.

Pos Ekspress however is only for small items such as documents. They usually sell envelopes that are pre-fixed sizes that can usually fit into a post box. They also have specific widths and heights that you would have to follow to send via Pos Ekspress. So if there is a small items (like tights, or a tiny tank top) that you would like to buy, opt for Pos Ekspress. It is cheaper as you would only have to buy the envelope. Just as long as the item fits into the envelope. Pos Ekspress’ envelopes are small enough to fit the post box because it does not require a signature of someone to be collected. The postman usually just places it in the post bo, with no proof of receipt.

Pos Laju, on the other hand needs the reciever or someone else who’s in the household to actually acknowledge that the person has recieved the item. It can be the reciever or an authorised person that will have to place their IC number on it. If there’s no one at home, they will leave you a “sorry” note and ask you to collect the parcel on a later time at the respective pos Laju offices.Only the reciever or an authorised person can collect the parcel from the pos laju office. You can also call them to re-send the item to your address.

Kate Cosmetic Launch

Oct 1, 2008 Author: Sharyl | Filed under: Events, Fashion, Tips, Trends

Good news! We can all now have bigger looking eyes. Kate Cosmetics launched their 3 new products last Tuesday. It was held in the heart of K.L. at Avenue K. The event begun with 3 makeup artist giving a free makeover for the early birds. I, myself had a free makeover. The products used are all from Kate’s cosmetics and also their newly launched items. In case you are wondering, Kate cosmetics are from Kanebo Cosmetics Inc.

In this Autumn/Winter 2008 collection, Kate takes it to an extreme, be it the day time natural effect or the dramatic smoky eyes night effect can be easily achieved. Kate’s (with the tag line, No More Rules) main aim is to emphasize on the eyes, giving the eyes the smoky dramatic effect. Hence, playing down on the other features of the face.

Did you ever know how much emmagem team loves the color purple? This is probably because it is a color associated with love and romance, it is a royal colour, we love amethyts, it is an expensive colour to produce, it is a colour that flatters most skin type, we love the play and movie “The Color Purple” ,yes, we love Oprah and Deep Purple too and we also hope to enjoy a continuous period of purple patches and that’s just some of the reasons…

Berry is actually the colour of the coming Autumn Winter and this runs the gamut from a cranberry shade right up to blueberries and any other berries in between, but we have singled out our favorite berry colour, purple, and showed ten fabulous ways to wear the it in every imaginable way and fabric. Dress to Shop!

Aug 15, 2008 Author: Sharyl | Filed under: Boutique, Fashion, Shop Online, Shopping, Tips, Trends

Yes you read it right. Dress to shop that is. With all these bazaars and sales going on, who’s staying home? Not me! Who wants to look all pretty while doing their thing? Definitely me!! So you planned your destination, be it shopping malls or fashion boutiques, either way, you need to run to a few (at least lah!) shops to get the bargain goods you need/want. (Oh, btw, when it comes to shopping, needs and wants are the same, don’t cha think so? lolz!)

Instead of ruining your shopping day, the main key to have a great one is to DRESS COMFORTABLY! leave those 4inches heels to kill at events or a great girl’s night out. See some usefulness instead of pure fashion of wearing gladiators now?

Okay, well the whole point is, wear something comfortable. Something that is easy to take off and put it on again. Guess what? Slip ons dress are the best for this shopping occassion! Yet of course, you’d still wanna look awesomely good in it. See how comfy yet so much in style you can be?

taken from NYC streets

Due to our hot and warm weather here in Malaysia, dressing in body hugging tops or the jeans-that-clings-to-your-legs just may end your shopping trip early (Read : missing out on great bargains and then regret about it). Sometimes, the dressing rooms are filled with the long queues that it just turns you off, yet, you don’t wanna let go of the to-die-for bargain items. What do you do? That’s where slip on dress comes to the rescue! Stand in front of a mirror, if you can’t find one, get a friend for help. Just try on the shorts or slip over the top you have chosen there and then! But please be careful, you don’t want to be thrown out by the security for indecent exposure. (more…)

The Invincibility of the Invisibra TM

Aug 1, 2008 Author: yetmee | Filed under: Advertorials, Beauty, Fashion, Gym, Tips

Rushed in last night after combat class just had to share my latest discovery with my girlfriends, it’s all about the Ultra Invisibra TM. It really is quite invincible as far as holding us up is concerned. How often have we wondered how JLo’s managed to look perky in her award winning belly button plunging neckline Gucci dress?

I think it is really challenging to wear any type of deep plunging neckline dress because all that pushed up, cleavage effect is basically lost as we submit our bodies to the natural effects of gravity.  But I seriously believe I may have found the answer to this so called “problem”, three guesses and maybe a prize…. yes , yes ,the Ultra InvisibraTM. There are all kinds of stick-on bras in the market but none like this one, I dare say. It’s all about the push up effect, that’s all there is to it but  how does a couple of pieces of stickers make or break a successful seductive outfit?

Like this one from Asos.com

Well, it surely will work if the stickers allows you to push pull your glories any which way and height that you want, which is what the Invisibra does. Plus it is seamless which means you can wear even the thinnest tshirt jersey and it wouldn’t trace, did I mention it looks invisible because the material is transparent. The nipple pad is a tad thin, not transparent, is nude in color, the thinness means , oh I am struggling to put it delicately, it covers but perkiness will make its own point.

How the bra works, looks so cool huh?

It is touted as “the only truly backless and strapless bra”, not a claim made lightly. It gives the same type of push up effect without visible bra lines (VBL). Good to wear with bareback and halter tops and any evening dress for a great girl’s night out. No need to worry that the detachable bra cups have run out of place or that the angle is just a bit off. It also looks soft and natural and brave in the face of gravity.

As for me, I have always had a problem with my sports bra especially in combat class, as my Adidas top does not come padded. After  several front kicks, back kicks and jumps combined with some real rigorous cross punches, I usually find that my “boobs” have become a uni-boob, course as I jump the bra cups dislodge and move, so I am constantly checking and tugging to ensure that I don’t look like a sweaty alien. Besides, the cups are hard and look unnatural. And I don’t wear the other stick on ones, cause my skin reacts to them , they are also thicker and traces against the tight clingy top.

But in this case, the Invisibra is made of hypoallergenic material, designed to prevent discomfort, allergies and skin irritations. The fact that they are made out of medical adhesive means that they will stick on skin without causing pain , discomfort or allergies. They did not unpeel despite the intense soaking from all the sweat and peeled off painlessly after that. I’m quite impressed that after 5 hours of gym-ming, the bras still look pretty much as when I stuck them on, no crumples or loose ends. Since it is water resistant, it would be great for my cute triangle 3 piece swimsuit, except I’ll have to get a new a pair as they are not reusable.

Left breast without Ultra InvisibraTM, right one with Ultra InvisibraTM

The amazing thing is that despite it being backless and strapless it still managed to give support and lift breasts naturally and comfortably, was it my imagination or did my breasts  actually looked a tad shapelier…emmm.

Benefits of Invisi Bra™

Healthy Snacking 101

Jun 28, 2008 Author: louanne | Filed under: Health, Tips

Snacking might have a bad rap but we just can’t resist doing it whether in between lectures, during lunch break or even just sitting at home. But even then, snacking might not be all bad.

It is much healthier to eat smaller meals more frequently throughout the day, lets say probably 5 small meals a day. By doing so, our bodies will have a steady stream of nutrients and energy throughout the day. Having small meals throughout the day also curbs ourselves from overindulging at the next meals and thus actually consuming fewer calories a day.

But then, we couldn’t just snack on anything. We have to choose wisely and keep these healthy snacks on hand to avoid being tempted by the lure of high calorie snacks.

Read on to find out what snack foods are good for the body.

Nutty Fun

Nuts and seeds are healthy and appetizing. consuming a handful of nuts and seeds can improve circulation and muscle tone. Besides that, many nuts and seeds are full of arginine, vitamin E, lignants ans omega-3 fatty acids which help prevent heart disease, infertility and high blood pressure.

There are so many nuts and seeds to choose from - almonds, pine nuts, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds, to name a few. Mix and match any combination or even add some to your salad for extra flavor and texture.

An Apple A Day Keeps The Doctor Away

This is not just a phrase that a mom might say to their child to make them eat apples. It has actually been proven by studies conducted by scientists. It seems that people who consumed more apples have healthier hearts and lung function.

Apples contain pectin that helps decreases cholesterol levels as well as prevent colon cancer.

Berry Power

Be it blueberries, cherries or strawberries, these little fellas are packed with bioflavonoids, anthocyanins, tannins and other phytochemicals.

The flavonoids act as antioxidants that reduce free radicle damage as well as help reduce inflammation (apparently it is more effective than an asprin) . Consuming these compounds also protacts you against cancer, arthiritis and heart diseases due to their ability to lower cholesterol.

Avocado: The Green Master

Although an avocado doesn’t look pretty on the outside it is packed with glutathione, which is known as the ‘master antioxidant’. This compound regulates the immune system keeping us protected from harmful diseases, protacts against cancer and assists in the detoxifying process.

Happy Apricots

Apparently apricots are one of the staple foods of the famous centenarians in the Himalayas. Research has discovered that apricots have the highest level as well as the widest variety of carteniods of any food. Cartenoids are antioxdants that help prevent heart disease by reducing ‘bad cholesterol’.

Well, these are a few suggestions that i have made. I hope you find interesting ways to incorporate these healthy snacks into your daily diet :)

Maybe you have suggestions of your own that you wish to share??

Internet Security For Home Users

Jun 26, 2008 Author: yetmee | Filed under: Geek stuff, Lifestyle, Tips

We’ve all heard about phishing right, where you get emails from supposed respectable companies  and banks asking you to update your data and they are really just hoax emails from scammers. I know, companies like even  Paypal and  HSBC bank have been used in the effort to con some unsuspecting users to divulge information and passwords in order to siphon out your money or worse steal your identity…worse case of life imitating art…

Now even SMSes are not spared , have you ever received one of those? Two days ago I received an SMS informing me that I  won RM15,000 from Shell because my SIM card had been chosen in a lucky draw , which was curious. The call back number was a  handphone number and had  a guy with bad PR who refuses or was probably unable to verify himself and the “lucky” win although he did get the Shell HQ address right and hung up on me when pressed further. Well , I would have loved to win RM15,000 and as much as I believe in the Law of Attraction (now you know), something just didn’t click about the SMS and when all he wanted was to “fish ” for my personal info like full  name etc. Subsequent checking later revealed the company name of Shell typed in the SMS was wrong ie it was typed as Syarikat Shell Sdn. Bhd. which is not their corporate name and that the return call is to a private handphone number…so beware…  I lucked out on a fifteen grand “windfall” but gained wisdom ….

I digress of course, however internet security is a serious matter which we should all be aware of and take precautions against because the internet is a big part of our lives, at least if you are reading this it most probably is a major part of yours and I totally agree with Mr Schneier that criminals will go where the action (money) is.

Sp please read an excerpt of an interview  by STAR with Bruce Schneier ,  world renowned internet technologist and in fact is known as a “security guru” according to “The Economist” for the internet world on how  home users can improve their security.

Here’s what he says on some simple network hygiene practices, which I find to be quite basic and okay, workable and user friendly for me.

  1. Turn off the computer when you’re not using the computer especially the “always on internet conection”
  2. Keep laptop and PDA with you always like you would  your wallet.
  3. Back up data regularly
  4. Set up automatic update to receive security patches.
  5. Limit number of applications installed per machine.
  6. Limit the use of cookies and applets.
  7. Keep in mind that SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) encryption provided does not mean that the vendor is trustworthy or that its customer information is secure.
  8. Think before you do business with a website, limit the financial and personal data given.
  9. Never reuse a password for something you care about.
  10. Assume that all PINS (personal Indentification numbers) can be easily broken and plan accordingly.
  11. Never type password  for a service like a bank account without  an SSL encrypted page. If the bank or vendor says it is okay, complain to them . It is not okay.
  12. Turn off HTML emails, don’t assume  that any email from the  “From” is really the real deal. Delete spam without reading.
  13. Use either a combination or separate antivirus and antispyware.Always update.
  14. Use personal firewall software, if can, hide your  IP address.
  15. Install email and file encryptor, so that you can send sensitive files this way.

These are just some healthy network hygiene methods although not necessary foolproof and a case where prevention is better than cure I guess, so that your unfriendly neighborhood hacker don’t get to come in and mess with your personal info and stuffs.

Well, they did forwarn us that whilst technology can speed up our lives and make shopping from your couch easy and safe amongst other uses, it isn’t without some risk like everything else. So we have to be responsible to ensure that we are adequately protected. See it as precautions that you would take for your brick and mortar home.   lols:-)

Fashionable Enviromental Friendly Bags!

Jun 8, 2008 Author: karenmarie | Filed under: Fashion, Lifestyle, Shop Online, Specials, Tips

I came across Envirosax way back when i was writing about environmental friendly bags last month. I thought, wow, these bags are really cute, way cuter than the ones we get from shopping malls.

To refresh your memory, here’s an excerpt:

Here are some reasons why you should stop taking plastic bags:

  • It is estimated that 500 billion plastic bags are used and discarded worldwide every year.
  • 1 million plastic bags are used and discarded worldwide every minute of the day.
  • Single use plastic bags made of HDPE remain in the environment for up to approx. 1,000 years.
  • Over 100,000 birds, whales, seals and turtles worldwide are killed by plastic rubbish every year.
Source: Envirosax, a company that sells eco friendly bags in Australia

Plastic bags are non biodegradable and it is killing sea animals like these turtles in Malaysia.

Most of the major shopping malls in KL (like 1 Utama, Bangsar Village, Jusco etc.) has already adopted the eco-friendly bags in their stores.

So, try to reduce using plastic bags, take baby steps. . .

  • If you’re at 7-11 for chewing gum and a bottle of water, carry the bottle in your hands and put the gum in your bag.
  • If you’re shopping with a large enough bag, put your clothes in your bag and keep the receipt properly (you do not want to be questioned for shoplifting!)
  • Most importantly, carry a eco-friendly bag with ya!

I believe if we all do this together, we will make a difference.

Admit it, I know some of you love those plastic bags from your favourite shops because it is so pretty! I’ve seen this lady in the Body Shop who asked for an extra plastic bag. What better way to carry your clothes/stuff in pretty but also reusable bags?

Envirosax is not only too pretty, it also serves as a fashionable reusable bag that are light weight and can be used repeatedly!

Envirosax is now available in Malaysia!:D :D :D I want one!!

Flora

Question: How to take care of your white clothes?

Apr 10, 2008 Author: karenmarie | Filed under: Fashion, How to, Question, Tips

F21 Scoopneck top - Forever 21

We have a question from a reader:

Was wondering if you know any tips on how to take care of your white clothes? I just stained mine! OMG! It was a favorite dress of mine. It is not like washed with coloured, but just yellowish stain. So sad…
-Shwueey-

Our opinion:

One method I have always sworn by is not bleaching my whites. But rather, soak them in cold water and detergent, rinsed and hang them in the heat away from the sun. The reason for not bleaching is because white is actually a color just like any other color and apparently has same number of tone variations like green. Pure cotton is actually a light dirty brown color. And if you don’t hang the whites under the sun , the white colour will not be the yellowish white you see, but a clean pure white. My mother thinks I am crazy, but some friends of mine even go as far as drying their whites in the bathroom totally protected from the sun in order to keep it from turning yellow.

Love, Yetmee

Comfy Shoes

Apr 8, 2008 Author: Elaine Loke | Filed under: Fashion, Tips, Trends

On a casual day, you just feel like skipping around, letting loose, or maybe to brunch and just shopping with your girls. What do you slip on? It’s not a night out to paint town red, so the killer heels are a total no-no. Sneakers might look too boyish and flip-flops are just too casual.

Well, the solution is just to settle for ballet flats. It’s very feminine and is always stylish. You can look cute in pretty shoes without having to suffer the ache in the feet.

We couldn’t be happier to sink our feet into these comfy and fashionable flats.

How many times have you attended a hen party or bachelorette party or hen’s night with yet anticipation of an exciting male striptease act and yet again(yawn) because once more , you were subjected to the same act of male stripping and some grinding and more gyrating of a buffed up male body?.Okay, the sight of a well-oiled, tanned stripper can be quite exciting and get a girl’s heart thumping but, let’s face it, most of the acts in Kuala Lumpur aren’t quite Chippendale quality are they, enthusiastic and professionals though they may be.

A friend told me of a hen party she went to, where the organizer had rented a male striptease act at RM800 for an hour’s act, which ended up with the male stripper chasing twenty “virginal” girls around the bed of the hotel room and him rebuking them for not making the most of his “services?” By the way, there is a ‘no touching allowed’ rule when it comes to this type of acts worldwide, for obvious safety reasons. Most times, they just play games like making the bride eat bananas or something silly. And let’s face it, in Malaysia , most of us are quite shy about being overtly curious about sex. No, we are not going to talk about sex this issue, but more about types of bachelorette parties that are more self-experiential, adventurous, perhaps a tad wacky and definitely off the beaten track.
