Spiked Drinks

Jun 6, 2008 Author: yetmee | Filed under: Health, Lifestyle, Specials

We’ve heard of date rape, Rohinol, spiked drinks and all, well check out the video below, see , how easily and unsuspectingly it can be done…

Hey, pays to be safe than sorry.. next time you’re out partying , make sure that you take care of you and your drink. Keep it within vision, never leave drink unattended and not even with close friends… they’re out to have fun too , not play watch dog to your gin and tonic …When I am out with my girlfriends there is an unspoken pact we look out for each other, but if you watch the video, you can’t blame anyone if something goes wrong cos, bad people can be very, very tricky…

I mean I always wonder at people whom I meet at a dinner table or a party for like half an hour and they would ask me to “just watch out” for their handbags or their drinks. I mean I look quite the fierce and honest type and I am a girl , but you never know , people can be in cahoots with someone else, surely you have watch enough movies and read the newspapers about girls who lure other girls …

So don’t bring large handbags that needs “taking care of” . I don’t deny it is troublesome to dance with a drink in hand and a large handbag, but either get creative or don’t order drink if you wanna dance…okay that is just me! You might better alternatives.

Also ensure that you only go home with people you know and want too, in the case of a sloshed girlfriend , you might wanna look out for her, that she is of coherent thought should you see her with some stranger who is cosying up on her…

Sorry if I am nagging and carrying on and if you have seen this video before….see it again..

Lisa Foo-Multi Faceted Designer

Jun 3, 2008 Author: yetmee | Filed under: Careers, Fashion, KL in The Prime, Lifestyle

You’ve all seen the pictures of the EMMA House, well now meet the lady who designed it.

Considering the amount of recognition in the local architecture circle of that concrete box house” in Bukit Damansara and being published in several international magazines like Elle Decoration Hong Kong, Architectural Digest Italy, Residence Jubilee Issue Amsterdam and Bolig Exclusive Denmark, means the diminutive and unassuming Lisa Foo is a giant of achievements. Just grazing her third decade, she has built her first house (as opposed to a firm’s) whence most architects may never see such a completion even after years in the business and already been published by her own accolades rather than of a firm’s, professionally this is no small feat.

She shops mostly overseas, in the children’s department, (did I not say diminutive), okay , maybe during her school days on a student budget but still, I am making a point that one should not be fooled because there is nothing tiny about her outlook and approach in life. I don’t want to use the word ambitious because I found what compels this person is not material wealth nor fame , but I would rather use the word “grandiose” because here is a person who believes in herself and her abilities and makes her vision come through without pomposity or imposition. She persuades, cajoles and perseveres especially when others tells her it is impossible until she gets the results she wants. She doesn’t believe in being anti-establishment as most creative individuals are wont to be because she believes people need support to get things done. She also believes in speaking up, doing sufficient research and showing people the reason to do something.

She wants to “save” the world, she is fluid about the future, because she is open to possibilities. She creates and pushes the envelope and unwittingly make her mark, she gives her all, “that concrete box house” was remarked upon by a senior architect “… designed as if it was the last work she would do…”), and Lisa admits, that is how she usually approaches things she is passionate about. In the case of EMMA House, she felt she had nothing to lose and she went all out. Amongst her many challenges, she persuaded a steel contractor to ** construct a steel staircase from a whole piece of steel, even though many might have reservation on the buildability. By constantly stretching her own imagination and changing the mind set of others, she usually takes others to a different level of achievement. The steel guy decided to take up the challenge and a staircase was created.

**Lisa …. The steel staircase was designed as a single sculptural piece in the living area and is made out of 2 tons of flat steel plate which was rolled to create a rounded bottom like a chute. Well, it is not the normal staircase you see in the house and hence, I had to hunt for the right sub-contractor who’s willing to construct it. I managed to find a steel contractor who’s also passionate about his work and willing to take on this challenge even though they have never seen or done anything like it in Malaysia.

Anything is possible, if there’s a will and you believe in it for the right reason….” (more…)

Everyone’ s going green and I don’t mean with envy but rather about saving the environment because if we all don’t start playing our part , there won’t be much of this green planet left. These days , recycling awareness from shopping bags to soda cans is ever increasing and people now realize that one of the most important things is to recycle and reduce or stop the usage of plastic bottles, plastic bags, styrofoam cups and containers (when “ta- pau” ot take -away).

I am a newbie at this green thing, I mean I grew up with plastic bags and styrofoam cups , so convenient as if my bag isn’t heavy enough with my two makeup pouches , wallet, keys, notebook (very important for business) , hand phone (akin to my whole life ,cannot live without) and oh, loads of coins , what now I must carry extra cotton bag and bring own cup and maybe saucer too.

But more and more, I am beginning to realize that if I love myself and don’t want to roast from the thinning ozone layers and drown from the melting icebergs , that is if I don’t expire first from getting poisoned after years of eating and drinking off styrofoam cups and containers, then I better start playing my small part. And as the famous Buddhist monk said on his death bed…”if only I saw the wisdom of changing myself first , I might have eventually influenced the people around me to change from my example and then perhaps I would have changed the world…”.

Well I ain’t no monk, but I do believe , everything starts from one, one intention, one small action and it always starts with one’s self first…

Lucky for me, a lot of people think like I do ( so less work on my part ,phew! just need to get more people to think alike …). Two very talented ladies have started showcasing some of their very creative conservation artworks, Miss Lisa Foo( architect and designer of EMMA House, pls look forward to our interview with her next week) and Miss Su Sim (landscape designer), I first saw some of their works at the Art Fair at The Annexe, you mite have read my article or not (shame on you, if you didn’t :-)) and I was mighty impressed , so I bought one of the table lamps featured and I am so thrilled by it….yea! I also bought a wood block covered with a page about wheels from an early encyclopedia (it’s old , it’s old), these two blocks connected by 2 hinges each has a word on it -”rot ” and “ate” but together they “rotate”, cool or what! The wood block is by Fabian Tan (another architect) .

Kanyadaan

May 21, 2008 Author: karenmarie | Filed under: Entertainment, Events, Lifestyle

I just came back from a emotionally provoking play at the Actor’s Studio, Bangsar. I must say, it has brought up a lot of emotions and feelings as my friends and I watched this play. Kanyadaan is a famous play from India with an all Indian cast. The story’s theme is “The giving of a daughter” where it revolves around a family’s dynamics as the role of the daughter changes as she gets married.

The story also revolves around thought provoking conversations about the social class system in India. It also shows how the family’s identity changes as one family member makes a drastic change in her life. There are humor in between all the drama despite all the hard social class issues being presented. The actors were really good and they portrayed the parts really well. We were all so moved by the sheer emotions showed by them.

This play is written by one of India’s best-known play writer, Vijay Tendulkar who sadly passed away just yesterday. I’m glad to say that I’ve watched his piece of work and it is pretty powerful plus it sends a strong message.

Directed by Lillete Dubey

Starring Lillete Dubey, Rajendra Gupta, Joy Sengupta, Radhika Apte and Raghav Chanana.

Go catch it this weekend. Details from The Actor’s Studio below:

Presenter: The Actors Studio & The Primetime Theatre India

Dates & Times: 20-24 May @ 8.30pm & 25 May @ 3pm

Tickets: RM60, RM40 & RM20 (for students)

Venue: TAS @ BSC

This award winning play, by one of India’s best known playwrights, is one of his most powerful human dramas. The story of a daughter’s transformation into a wife and a mother, the play is charged with significant social and moral questions, which are deeply thought provoking, and to which there are no easy answers. A young woman from a politically active family that regards itself as progressive and liberal, decides to marry a socially inferior, but talented man. Tendulkar explores the texture of modern life and social change in India through the forces this marriage unleashes. This gripping play, which is also laced with humour, is charged with an undercurrent of violence, uncertainties and anger, and concerns itself with questions that are crucial to all societies grappling with change and social barriers.

ADUNA - Land of adventure

May 18, 2008 Author: yetmee | Filed under: Entertainment, Lifestyle

I just came back from witnessing a different kind of beauty this evening, hot bods aside. ADUNA is a dance theatre which combines choreography from urban dances like breakdancing, capoiera and other acrobatics . Through contemporary and poetic staging and some awesome music, the dancers tell the story of seven adventurers in search of their destiny , facing and confronting their fears and also the discovery and joy of freedom . ADUNA incidentally means gathering of notion of world and destiny in African Wolof language.

The dancers were amazing, perfect isolation of movements combined with strength and precision in seemingly effortless movements are a beauty to withhold and then some. From no storyline and words, they take us through every step of their journey from being lost in the desert , the agony of poisoning due to drinking bad water through their adventurous journey and right down to their pleasure of enjoying the rain and freedom at last. The fluidity of movement and limbs combined with strong agility is breathtaking. In an early scene , watching seven male dancers lifting themselves up from the floor at a 45 degree angle at precisely the same moment is undescribable. Or maybe watching several dancers crawling all over the dance floor like the alien in Alien , is more eerily spellbinding , I can’t decide.

You get the feeling that these dancers somehow seem to lack the smoothness and sexy rhythm of say Madonna’s back up dancers but yet executing more or less the same moves in a much more “primal” and raw, I do mean , very manly raw way especially when combined with the brilliant African drumbeat and sounds effect. Yet they seek not to be sexy or sexual (okay, except that one short scene when they were doing a tumble and one guy ’s head is is in between the other guy’ legs, maybe it’s me, my mind’s in the gutter ) , whilst managing to do just that.

And you can tell that these dancers are having fun as evident in their impromptu solo performance finale due to the encore demands from an unsatiated and screamin’ (I kid you not) female fans and some quite impressed male fans too!! Down girl and boy… At the end of the show, everyone was comparing how red their palms were from all that clapping.

Some history, this dance is choreographed by Ibrahim Sissoko who formed Etha Dam (in 1998) along with some talented dancers who share a same mindedness ( etat d’ame) in appreciation of dance in the search of self and spririt.

Well, too bad they are only performing in KL for one night and then they are off to Hong Kong, maybe next year at the annual French Festival they will come back , I shall certainly book my seat!

Well, so much for my francaise immersion , I shall say au revoir and bonne nuit!

Randy Pausch’s Last Lecture

Have you ever stop to think , what if today is it …the end, finito , end of the line! A little morbid for a sunny Saturday morning, well it is actually more than a little morbid for any time of day or week. There is no good time however for such a thoght but then again maybe right now, right this minute is as good a time as any! The video I have attached, that have been viewed more than a million(perhaps you have already too but watch again:-)) , will perhaps shed some light as to my need to share this “joy” of a brilliant saturday morning. It is a video (from Oprah Winfrey’s Show) about appreciating the present; if you ever think life threw you a raw deal , think again and perhaps you will see that life throws you ” gifts” in funny ways and that there is a silver lining in every cloud and that we, as in you and I, really get to see and decide if the glass of our life is half full or empty! Enjoy or complain; be brave or be not…you decide!

I have been trying my very best to stop taking plastic bags from shops (Carrying a HUGE bag helps too!). You should try it. It is a simple way of helping mother earth. Think about how much plastic you take every time you go for a shopping spree day. . . All that plastic bag usage can be reduced if we had an alternative eco-friendly bag instead!

It was a fad when Anya Hindmarch launched her recycling bag “I am not a plastic bag”. For a moment there, everyone was carrying an eco-friendly bag (well, most of them for the wrong reasons). But, still, the idea is to stop using plastic bags. Here are some reasons why you should stop taking plastic bags: (more…)

Question: How to curl my hair?

Apr 19, 2008 Author: karenmarie | Filed under: How to, Lifestyle

Vidal Sassoon Curling Iron from amazon.com

Curls, curls, curls..bouncy curls

Hi, I’m planning to buy a hair curler cos I don’t want permanent curls. Some days i like my hair curly and some days i like it straight.

Can you tell me which brand curler to buy and how to use it? is there any product that i should before and after i use the curler? what brand of product is best to achieve soft and still touchable curly hair.

I don’t want to be like the 80’s with the big and harden with gel curls ;D

i am totally clueless ;D

Thank you very much!!

-Karen Lee-

Hey Karen Lee, I have a friend names Karen Lee too:)

Anyways, I have always wanted to know these things too! I myself am totally clueless.

But I will try to help you out(with the little that i know about this). I always believed that those 8-in-1 curler/straightener are always the way to go, because, then you can curl and straighten and etc. HAHA. Of course, to keep your hair curly, you need to use special curling gels that are available at any hair product line in Watson’s or Guardians (or anywhere else). But since i have never used any, i shall not recommend which ones are good.

Here’s a video on how to curl your hair from eHow! :D
