House Bunny Movie Event

Oct 2, 2008 Author: karenmarie | Filed under: Entertainment, Events, Fashion, Lifestyle

We went to watch the movie and had so much fun!

The movie itself was REALLY funny and awesome. It had a lot of jokes and those jokes are super dumb blonde type jokes, but very funny really. It was a Happy Madison Production which means it is an Adam Sandler movie, so you know what to expect. :D Truly a perfect chick flick to be watched with your girlfriends.  We all did have a lot of fun.

Before the movie started, we gave out tickets and took some pictures.

Back: Xuezhen, Ginny, Karen
Front: Louanne, Rachael, Amelia, Janice, Jasmine (I think, please correct me if i’m wrong)

Well… well Kylie Minogue will be kicking off her Asian tour in Hong Kong and Singapore.

How come she is not coming to Malaysia? Maybe it is too much of a challenge for her choreographer or wardrobe designers, I reckon a watered down Kylie show may not be the standard she is willing to compromise . And frankly, I don’t think I will spend good money on anything less than world standard performance. And surely she has better things to do then handle demonstrations by such and such groups who wants some attention. I certainly doubt she will be crying to defend her performance as not too sexy like a recent Indonesian artiste , poor thing . She is an artiste and she performs where her work of art is appreciated. I just finished watching “The Untouchables ” starring Kevin Costner, Sean Connery and Andy Garcia rerun on Astro , twice within the last 12 hours… and I must say watching handsome hunks in gorgeous Armani suits dashing around playing cops and robbers is very entertaining on a weekend. This movie was a showcase for Armani suits when it first came out. I love the menswear fashion of the 1920’s; the 3 piece suits, fedoras, leather bomber jackets and oxfords , the only word I can think of , okay, two words, yummy and dapper. (more…)

Shirts4Real held an official launch for their new line of T shirts last Friday and emmagem was there to witness the event. Shirts4Real has been operating since last year and since then has received tremendous support from their fans. According to Jan, the owner of Shirts4real, each T shirt is painstakingly designed with a meaning to each piece. Not every design is for fun, but each of them has a purpose. Ultimately, their purpose is to make a difference in lives of youth today.

Their launch was located in front of Taylors College Subang Jaya at a small little cafe called Positive Cafe. On that day, they were all there together with friends and family to launch the official partnership with Positive Cafe to sell their T shirts there and also to launch their new line of T shirts called Illuminate. RWP -Reading while Waiting Project

Aug 23, 2008 Author: yetmee | Filed under: Entertainment, Events, Fashion, Geek stuff, Lifestyle, News

Yes, it is happening in Kuala Lumpur , 23rd August 2008 at 3pm (I read in the papers) at KL Sentral in front of Dunkin Donut… 6500 people have been invited to read simultaneously “while waiting” , and this will happen also across Singapore, Christchurch , Wellington , Sydney , Melbourne and Eindhoven . It is organised by the same group of KL Freeze project at Pavillion in June , you may have read in the papers about it or maybe you attended the event. Well, I love reading , am trying to sneak away from work to attend , see you there! Imagine the feeling of reading with so many people at the same time, WOW!

Reading is always such an individual activity and it is so novel to bring together and connecting people who are passionate about reading… and better yet encouraging in the new readers to participate in one of the most fulfilling activity around at least for my existence… Yep , even better than shopping … clothes “fills” you up on the outside, but reading can make you feel filled up inside and makes you feel really compact with all the information and knowledge and insights gleaned…and you can take on the world in all your finery!

No Limits -First Malaysian Sci-Fi Musical

Jul 15, 2008 Author: yetmee | Filed under: Entertainment, Events, Fashion, Lifestyle

Got  free tickets last nite to the above musical , directed by Low Ngai Yuen and written by Yim Mei Choo with musical direction by Penny Low. This is the same group who wrote “Rose, Rose I love you” musical.

First of all, it is sponsored by Honda for the new Honda Accord , get it , No limits…

The cast is somewhat new , like comedian and I believe DJ KK Wong, Mary George , Malik Taufiq , Joanna Bessey and Gloria Ting. Perhaps the most experience actress there is Joanna Bessey, which makes the rest of them seem like amateurs.. .

Because it is a musical , the music and the singing is relative good, acting not spectacular. This would be easy peasy acting for Joanna Bessey (her toughest moment was when the evil KK, gave her multiple memories one minute Britney spears, next Auntie 18 from Kungfu Hustle and the next a temptress) and  there was a moment when her experience shines through like during her love scene with Christopher. The rest of the time, it just seemed like a high school musical act, sorry…The singing by Acapella group , the Stillettos was good , but not stunning. Mary George , just did not bring out her character’s strength and heroism, though her  voice was strong.   Now Gloria Ting as Miss Apple, did the shrewish teacher bit quite well , I must say I’m quite impressed with her diction. Malik Taufiq, gave a new take to ‘kayu’ act with his naive boy with very long white fake lashes which could be seen batting at Joanna Bessey, his love interest (all the way from where we were seated about 8 rows away) making his shy soft character Christopher quite endearing. Btw,those  arms look great on stage , Malik…very sexy against the sleeveless leather vest…he goes to my gym…yeah!

The main spill would be from KK Wong , who interspersed his English dialogue with sarky Cantonese slangs,  funny, but in a sarky, crass, canto -pop way.

Oh-oh, the story line right, well it is about year 2035, a strange magnetic force has caused the world’s population to lose all their memory save for Mary George, who as a scientist escaped the event cause she was caught in her own time warp experience . And when she returned found that she had to do the right thing and give the world their memories back. KK as  the evil assistant turned villain, who objected to her giving back the memory to the people, good or bad as is because that is what is right,  decided to jump ship and make his own machine  to give people perfect or ideal memories. Now NLP practitioners would really relate to him , cause he talks about creating perfect visions, implanting it in and leaving the unhappy past behind, even though argues Dr Q,  peoples’ remembered history tells their past values and they can choose to be whoever they want henceforth. Her argument is that he is playing God, by creating and choosing  people’s memories for them and subsequently abusing his power by  turning people into personal slaves.

There is a clever twist at the end, where we discover he is actually the scientist whose failed experiment was what caused the memory loss , sorry have I mentioned this is sci-fi …    The songs were cute (adapted songs from like Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” when the the two groups fought for what is right, the love duet betwen Kim and Christopher, or Any Winehouses’s “Rehab” lyrics when one character was caught for an implant and refusing to succumb to the villain’s evil ways. An then of course, there was the character of  Ling Chee Kang, who discovered he was a Kung Fu master with a murderous past, gave some pretty original Kung Fu moves like the twisted snake fist and drunken fists which were amusing.

Basically, the dialogue as my friends who were with me said, could be better and since it is a  musical, they really should use better dancers although the costumes were creative and befitting ( leather and tights always do it for me anyway), and the moral of the story is good. I mean , in one of  the dialogues they explain why people need to know their past.  It isn’t the memories that they need but the values that they had will determine the choice in how they live their lives, now that they have seen a better way of living.

Overall , as Randy Jackson (American Idol judge would say), you know, you all look cute, great effort at attempting the First sci-fi  musical in Malaysia, but it was just okay for me, dudes…!!

8tv Gossip Girl Party

Jun 16, 2008 Author: karenmarie | Filed under: Entertainment, Events, Fashion, Lifestyle

So 8tv organized a Gossip Girl Party and we went! I was so excited, because I am a fan of Gossip Girl AND I get to dress up!:) It was held at Bakerzine at 1 Utama Shopping Center.

(I’m still thinking of whether or not to post my picture here, lols)

So anyway the invite said 1.45pm, we reached there at about 1.50 pm and got the worst seats :( That’s for coming late! We looked around, and saw that not everyone dressed up New York Preppy, besides a few members of the media and a few other party goers.

We sat there for almost 45 minutes before they started the event. the event kicked off with a dance by a group of male dancers who danced to famous RnB songs. They were really good.

After that, the emcees announced the event schedule of the day and there was a fashion show, yay!

Designs were from our very own MOFSD shop owner cum designer, Button my Buttons by Shahida Shariff and also Project Runway designer, Nurita Harith.

Here are some images from Button my Buttons’ Fantasy collection:

Kanyadaan

May 21, 2008 Author: karenmarie | Filed under: Entertainment, Events, Lifestyle

I just came back from a emotionally provoking play at the Actor’s Studio, Bangsar. I must say, it has brought up a lot of emotions and feelings as my friends and I watched this play. Kanyadaan is a famous play from India with an all Indian cast. The story’s theme is “The giving of a daughter” where it revolves around a family’s dynamics as the role of the daughter changes as she gets married.

The story also revolves around thought provoking conversations about the social class system in India. It also shows how the family’s identity changes as one family member makes a drastic change in her life. There are humor in between all the drama despite all the hard social class issues being presented. The actors were really good and they portrayed the parts really well. We were all so moved by the sheer emotions showed by them.

This play is written by one of India’s best-known play writer, Vijay Tendulkar who sadly passed away just yesterday. I’m glad to say that I’ve watched his piece of work and it is pretty powerful plus it sends a strong message.

Directed by Lillete Dubey

Starring Lillete Dubey, Rajendra Gupta, Joy Sengupta, Radhika Apte and Raghav Chanana.

Go catch it this weekend. Details from The Actor’s Studio below:

Presenter: The Actors Studio & The Primetime Theatre India

Dates & Times: 20-24 May @ 8.30pm & 25 May @ 3pm

Tickets: RM60, RM40 & RM20 (for students)

Venue: TAS @ BSC

This award winning play, by one of India’s best known playwrights, is one of his most powerful human dramas. The story of a daughter’s transformation into a wife and a mother, the play is charged with significant social and moral questions, which are deeply thought provoking, and to which there are no easy answers. A young woman from a politically active family that regards itself as progressive and liberal, decides to marry a socially inferior, but talented man. Tendulkar explores the texture of modern life and social change in India through the forces this marriage unleashes. This gripping play, which is also laced with humour, is charged with an undercurrent of violence, uncertainties and anger, and concerns itself with questions that are crucial to all societies grappling with change and social barriers.

ADUNA - Land of adventure

May 18, 2008 Author: yetmee | Filed under: Entertainment, Lifestyle

I just came back from witnessing a different kind of beauty this evening, hot bods aside. ADUNA is a dance theatre which combines choreography from urban dances like breakdancing, capoiera and other acrobatics . Through contemporary and poetic staging and some awesome music, the dancers tell the story of seven adventurers in search of their destiny , facing and confronting their fears and also the discovery and joy of freedom . ADUNA incidentally means gathering of notion of world and destiny in African Wolof language.

The dancers were amazing, perfect isolation of movements combined with strength and precision in seemingly effortless movements are a beauty to withhold and then some. From no storyline and words, they take us through every step of their journey from being lost in the desert , the agony of poisoning due to drinking bad water through their adventurous journey and right down to their pleasure of enjoying the rain and freedom at last. The fluidity of movement and limbs combined with strong agility is breathtaking. In an early scene , watching seven male dancers lifting themselves up from the floor at a 45 degree angle at precisely the same moment is undescribable. Or maybe watching several dancers crawling all over the dance floor like the alien in Alien , is more eerily spellbinding , I can’t decide.

You get the feeling that these dancers somehow seem to lack the smoothness and sexy rhythm of say Madonna’s back up dancers but yet executing more or less the same moves in a much more “primal” and raw, I do mean , very manly raw way especially when combined with the brilliant African drumbeat and sounds effect. Yet they seek not to be sexy or sexual (okay, except that one short scene when they were doing a tumble and one guy ’s head is is in between the other guy’ legs, maybe it’s me, my mind’s in the gutter ) , whilst managing to do just that.

And you can tell that these dancers are having fun as evident in their impromptu solo performance finale due to the encore demands from an unsatiated and screamin’ (I kid you not) female fans and some quite impressed male fans too!! Down girl and boy… At the end of the show, everyone was comparing how red their palms were from all that clapping.

Some history, this dance is choreographed by Ibrahim Sissoko who formed Etha Dam (in 1998) along with some talented dancers who share a same mindedness ( etat d’ame) in appreciation of dance in the search of self and spririt.

Well, too bad they are only performing in KL for one night and then they are off to Hong Kong, maybe next year at the annual French Festival they will come back , I shall certainly book my seat!

Well, so much for my francaise immersion , I shall say au revoir and bonne nuit!
