Bold Prints Making A Statement

Nov 12, 2008 Author: Sharyl | Filed under: Fashion, KL in the RAW, Trends

Meet Samantha, the owner of an online boutique called Peaches & Pixies. Her colourful bold prints caught my eyes instantly. She was such a dear to spend a couple of minutes to answer some questions despite that she was so busy attending to her customers.

Her headband was purchased from Bangkok. The colourful bold printed dress that states “PUNK IS NOT PRETTY” is from Bangkok as well. It’s actually a short sleeves dress but because Samantha is such a tiny girl, she made it into a one sided off-shoulder dress. Her booth was at the entrance without much of the air-conditioned blowing her way, but she wasn’t complaining. The material of the dress is really comfortable that suits perfectly with the hot weather in Malaysia. Her gladiator was purchased from Bijou Bazaar. Gladiator shoes came and made a big hit and its here to stay. Some styles come and go with a blink of an eye, but the gladiators’ shoes are still very much popular.

Samantha described her style as vintage, retro and is very much into the quirky style. I’d say the bold print does a lot of eye-catching as the place was really crowded but yet she manages to stand out. If a tiny girl like Samantha can stand out, imagine what the bold prints can do for the rest of us? As they say, “Words are powerful weapons”.

Kinky Joker Nurse for Halloween!

Nov 7, 2008 Author: Sharyl | Filed under: Fashion, KL in the RAW, Shopping

So Halloween was on last Friday, I’m sure many of you had major parties to attend to. Jolene Lai, from www.jayelleenelial.com attended the Nuffnang’s Nokie Silent Halloween party. Of course anyone could guess what her outfit is, the Kinky Joker Nurse! When one is wearing a costume, there is only one rule for it, exaggerate!

Like Jolene had said “Because Halloween is a perfectly legit reason for girls to go all out slutty without being called one.” I couldn’t agree more! And she won the runner up prize for the best dressed outfit in the female category! Need I say more?

Let’s do a breakdown on where she gotten her outfit from. Her white top and cap is from Ebay, by the seller of CK Beauty. The wig is from Popcornmushroom.multiply.com, RM 75. The skirt is from a night market in Penang, RM 17. Stockings are from Soxworld in Queensbay, Penang, only for RM 30. The patent pink flat pumps are from Far East Plaza, Singapore which cost SGD19. And of course, not to forget the stethoscope! It’s from Medical Instruments Supply store in SS15, Subang Jaya for RM150. She’s a dental student, so that’s why she had a real stethoscope and not the fake ones.

But the outfit is only playing 60% part of the image she was trying to create. She then drew a very much exaggerated joker makeup to finish up the whole costume. Even by a far it’s obvious it’s the joker face she was creating.

Here are the makeup items she used to create the joker look. It consists of Face Powder (RM 7), Lipstick, two shades of red (RM 14), Eyeliner (RM 7), and Mascara (RM 6) from Chameleon. The mascara was smeared around the eyes slightly above the black eye shadow. The black and dark brown eye shadow is from Elianto, only for RM 5 each.

So there is no need for expensive makeup products to create a look that would only last for a night. These products that do not burn a hole in your wallet are still able to allow to create any look you want! Get your artistic talent out and the key is to be creative!

Sparkle Me Gold

Oct 21, 2008 Author: Sharyl | Filed under: Boutique, Fashion, KL in the RAW, Shop Online, Shopping

Say hi to FM!  I truly believe that it’s not only during the festive seasons that we could wear our own traditional clothes.

Let’s just say, if you want to stand out, to be different from others, this could be the very thing that allows you to do just that!

The cheongsam was from a shop called Oriental, Sunway Pyramid. The clutch is from Bangkok. And the shoes, is from the online boutique, Shopaholics Unite! I instantly recognized the shoes, well, because I bought one too! What can I say, I’m a stiletto addict!

One thing about being a Malaysian is that you are able to wear other culture’s traditional clothes. For instance, if you are a Chinese, does not mean you cannot wear baju kebaya or a sari. Or vice versa. Sometimes, I see many Chinese wearing the Malay traditional clothes  often for events. That’s one of the beauty of being a Malaysian of course.

Clean Gleam Denim

Oct 17, 2008 Author: Sharyl | Filed under: Designers, Fashion, KL in the RAW, Shopping

Say hi to Nicole! We first met her at one of the sales/bazaar events. Her love for fashion got her coming down all the way from Penang to KL. And just on that day, there were two bazaars held at two different locations, one in KL and another in Bangsar Shopping Centre (BSC). Both the events she went! See how everyone loves bazaars?

Nicole described her style as the clean cuts, casual denim, unique and eccentric. She loves earthen tones and the natural fibers. See that her style is influenced by the skater-surfer attitude, which explains her love for denim. And that is because she’s living by the beach nearly all her life.

Her biggest weakness is for bags, sweaters, flip-flops and sneakers. As mentioned, the headband was from a belt of a kimono robe. Make full use of the clothes own! You never know what treasure you may have in store in your closet. The white tank top is from Topshop. And the denim jean is from MNG.

A gentle reminder to those who wants to be featured on our KL in the Raw section, send us your photos to lynnafcl@emmagem.com and describe your style! Remember, fashion fades but style is forever!

Minimalist With A Touch of Elegance!

Oct 7, 2008 Author: Sharyl | Filed under: Designers, Fashion, KL in the RAW, Trends

In the previous Style Contest, Izzati, or rather Tati, was our 1st runner up winner. As I looked back at the photos she sent, I couldn’t help but to put this up for our KL in a Raw feature. She described her style as undone yet put together, minimalist, grunge mixed with elegnace, and androgyny meets girly-ness.

As for her white eyelet top, she got it from Topshop. The necklace is from Barf. The dress, worn as a high-waist skirt is from Vintage Chloe. Her hounds tooth bag, is from Naraya, Bangkok. And last but not least, her shoes, is from Nose.

Mix and match your outfit, dresses could be worn as long skirts. Or the other way round, long skirts worn as a mini dress. There’s no stopping in fashion, as there is no right or wrong. It’s just the matter of feeling fabulous and comfortable as the next to your second skin.

Sporting Formal Casual

Sep 24, 2008 Author: Sharyl | Filed under: Boutique, Designers, Fashion, KL in the RAW, Trends

This week, we are featuring Jan from Shirts4Real! Emmagem was invited for the Shirts4Real official launch some weeks ago, and we met Jan. So I thought, why not feature a guy this time? His style is very much what most guys would wear. I dare say that because I’ve seen many of ‘em do! It’s because that his style screams relax and chill out, that it’s most suitable for almost any event and even for a clubbing night out!

So, where he get his clothes from? The coat, from Padini. The shirt and the jeans are both from Topman. And the shoes, Nike obviously.

I would say, the gents would look real smart dressed in this style. It potrays a cool casual look where you do not want to go over the top. Just replace the jeans with a pants, and the sport shoes with a leather shoes, then, it’ll be a business suit already. See what a little change can do? A whole lot, I would say!

Bright Light Retro

Sep 16, 2008 Author: Sharyl | Filed under: Designers, Fashion, KL in the RAW, Shop Online, Shopping, Trends

I was at Replacement Boutique, chatting away with some girlfriends, and this girl caught our eyes. My friend whispered … “You have to feature HER!”.

And so I did.

Meet Medina, another owner of the online boutique, the.junksters. She was so busy attending to her customers that she didn’t even realize it was the “Buka Puasa” time. Anyhow, let’s get down to her clothes.

The bf’s shirt and the tiny maroon belt are thrifted from Showpink junkyard sale. The pixel necklace is from froufrou. The vintage bag is well, from her hand-me-downs (my favorite item). Totally vintage. Fluorescent skinny jeans, is thrifted as well. Gold watch is from Casio. Lastly, her bright yellow pumps are from Cats Whiskers!

Now you know how to get retro in a bright manner!

Funky Girly Pink!

Sep 9, 2008 Author: Sharyl | Filed under: Designers, Fashion, KL in the RAW, Shop Online, Trends

I beg to differ if anyone comes telling me that pink should only be worn as skirts or dresses (think cheerleaders).

Meet Sherelyn Goh, a writer. See how she match her girly colour with the jumper to give the funky look she created? Awesome I tell you.

Now let me tell you girls where she got her outfit from. The necklace is from Topshop, could be worn as a long chain necklace or twice around the neck as done by Sherelyn. Pink vest, from Cats In A Bowl. Her jumpers from Tic Tac Toe. Belt from Mooie. Bracelet form Bangkok. Pink bag from Aldo. Shoes from Nine West.

She’s also a big fan of shopping online! It’s amazing what you can get from these online boutiques. Want proof? Just check out all our featured girls in KL in a Raw!

Quirky Bounce Back!

Sep 2, 2008 Author: Sharyl | Filed under: Boutique, Designers, Fashion, KL in the RAW, Trends

Meet Gabriena Lee. 20 year old Monash student. We had this love at first sight for her outfit when we saw her at an event. I’ve never been much of a fan of the quirky glasses until I saw hers and how she match it up with her outfit. She bought it from Vincci only to have it powered so it’s useful as also to make a fashion statement. As for her 2 piece outfit, she got it from her very own boutique - Glampot. Her love for the London street is what influencing her dressing style. I’d say GOOOO QUIRKY!

Cool Casual Chic

Aug 26, 2008 Author: Sharyl | Filed under: Boutique, Designers, Fashion, KL in the RAW, Shop Online, Shopping, Trends

We spotted Mei Ng, the owner from Stitch Project. We chatted for a bit, and guess what?

Everything she wore, was purchases from online boutiques! How cool is that?! Her giraffe necklace is from Soak Republic. Playsuit is from Oh! Popsicles. The black belt is from Cat Whiskers. Her Croc sling bag is from her very own online boutique, Stitch Project. Last but not least, her awesome gladiators, from Velvet Ribbons. She was a walking advertisment for online sales. Lolz!

Urban Street Attitude

Aug 23, 2008 Author: Sharyl | Filed under: Designers, Fashion, KL in the RAW, Trends

She was browsing through the items at the bazaar when what she wore caught my eye. The combination of the top and the 3-quarter pants gives it a hip-hop laid back street style. Her accessories were paired to a minimal to serve the attitude the look was giving. I love how the white and dark brown color contrast that match her tan skin tone which some of us Malaysians have. Her outfit was all bought from 1 Utama Shopping Centre, one of our favorite shopping haven!
