Jul 1, 2008 Author: louanne | Filed under: Fashion, Question, Shop Online, Trends

Pinstripe Cotton Vest from Forever 21

Hi!

I’m looking for a vest, not the halter vest for women. I want the man’s version of a vest but in a smaller size, of course. My budget is below RM 40.

Thanks!
Ashleigh

Hey Ashleigh,

Browsing through the online boutiques we tend to see that most of the vest sold are halter vests. But your in luck!! Cat in a Bowl Boutique has a piece that fits to your description down to the price tag!!

Enjoy!

How to wear boots?

Jun 20, 2008 Author: yetmee | Filed under: Fashion, How to, Question, Trends

booties2booties

I really love boots and I just think that wearing boots really jazzes up an outfit and gives  a sense of unexpectedness to it, be it a simple shift dress or even a mix match of knee length skirt with high boots. There is of course the weather constraint if wearing in Malaysia , but I think one must be brave where fashion is concern . And I am really glad to tell you that these days , young fashionistas just go for it hot or cold irregardless.

The general rule to wearing boots is the longer the skirt the higher the boots. I say generally because the bootie transgresses both long and short issue. I also believe sometimes if the combination is right , one should throw the rule book out the window. Boots because it originates as a reason to protect against the cold naturally look best when worn with tights unless you are Jessica Simpson than you just wear it with bikini top, cut off shorts and a cowboy hat and of course cowboy boots and make sure you are washing a Mustang and be dancing around it…

Let’s start from the bottom of the foot, a bootie , as mentioned earlier can be worn with both long and short skirts , flare or fitted skirt and likewise with pants. It can even look quite formal if the colour combination is right.

Mid calf to ankle boots are usually worn with  anything that is above the knees, but also look good tucked into pants of jeans.

Knee high boots are best  worn under skirts that covers the knees or tucked into slim pants or jeans. My new hairdresser wore her brown tanned leather boots with a  knee length summer shift dress and I thought she look so cool, chewing her gum as she cut my hair …

Thigh high boots on the extreme is  however a contradiction like the bootie as it is worn with usually short shorts or short skirts. It is also quite sexy  to just wear it with tights and  a top… or like J.Lo when she performed at 2007 American Idol to introduce her Spanish album and single , a long flowy caftan, split high at the sides and tights tucked in thigh high boots and with the light shining on her and fake  wind blowing at  her and …it was fiery…tough and soft at the same time.

I usually prefer boots that look more refined with heels and stilettoes with polish leather, but these days they have  ‘em flat , wedge heels and even with platform heels, take your pick. D&G featured boots that look like wellingtons with heels in orange color and they paired them with knee length tartan skirt and cardigan twinsets. And with that , a previously school marmish look has been  given a new twist…

So I know , we have summerlike weather all year round and it is still summer but all the fall fashion previews have made my winter soul nolstagic…so I guess I just have to take out my boots and give them a good airing…

Do you like boots too? What holds you back if any about buying a pair?

Hi,

Wondering if anyone here can help me find a nice white toga inspired dress…preferably knee length. I have a gorgeous pair of strappy bling heels I want to show off….the last time they were hidden under my wedding gown!

The grecian look is certainly something that’s in at the moment. It definitely looks really nice if worn with the correct accessories and shoes.

Everyone’ s going green and I don’t mean with envy but rather about saving the environment because if we all don’t start playing our part , there won’t be much of this green planet left. These days , recycling awareness from shopping bags to soda cans is ever increasing and people now realize that one of the most important things is to recycle and reduce or stop the usage of plastic bottles, plastic bags, styrofoam cups and containers (when “ta- pau” ot take -away).

I am a newbie at this green thing, I mean I grew up with plastic bags and styrofoam cups , so convenient as if my bag isn’t heavy enough with my two makeup pouches , wallet, keys, notebook (very important for business) , hand phone (akin to my whole life ,cannot live without) and oh, loads of coins , what now I must carry extra cotton bag and bring own cup and maybe saucer too.

But more and more, I am beginning to realize that if I love myself and don’t want to roast from the thinning ozone layers and drown from the melting icebergs , that is if I don’t expire first from getting poisoned after years of eating and drinking off styrofoam cups and containers, then I better start playing my small part. And as the famous Buddhist monk said on his death bed…”if only I saw the wisdom of changing myself first , I might have eventually influenced the people around me to change from my example and then perhaps I would have changed the world…”.

Well I ain’t no monk, but I do believe , everything starts from one, one intention, one small action and it always starts with one’s self first…

Lucky for me, a lot of people think like I do ( so less work on my part ,phew! just need to get more people to think alike …). Two very talented ladies have started showcasing some of their very creative conservation artworks, Miss Lisa Foo( architect and designer of EMMA House, pls look forward to our interview with her next week) and Miss Su Sim (landscape designer), I first saw some of their works at the Art Fair at The Annexe, you mite have read my article or not (shame on you, if you didn’t :-)) and I was mighty impressed , so I bought one of the table lamps featured and I am so thrilled by it….yea! I also bought a wood block covered with a page about wheels from an early encyclopedia (it’s old , it’s old), these two blocks connected by 2 hinges each has a word on it -”rot ” and “ate” but together they “rotate”, cool or what! The wood block is by Fabian Tan (another architect) .

helloo- you so stylo-ah!

May 19, 2008 Author: yetmee | Filed under: A Matter Of Opinion, Beauty, Designers, Fashion, Trends

Anna Piaggi

left) 2 pictures of  Anna Piaggi                                            right)Isabella Blow in white

You know, I can’t exactly remember the first time , I heard the word, “stylo -mylo”…it must be during the late seventies ,  the days of Saturday Night Fever,  guys with long sideburns and hala-hala  pants and platforms started appearing on the streets of Malaysia, even the kampung that I lived in. A spruced up guy with  slicked back Brylcreem-ed hair , days before hair gel and wet look..gets admiring sometimes sarky comments like , “wah you so stylo-ah!” And the most recent heard version of stylo , would be the STYLO fashion show organied by PR Queen Nancy Yeoh with some of her good friends and counterparts like Pat Liew of British India and Farah Khan.  She featured selected few high end local designers like Rizalman,  Bernard Chandran and some others. It was clarified that this Stylo event , was really meant for the “stylish”of Malaysian society (read high society and private parties)  rather than to promote Malaysian fashion although there were fashion shows performed in a red tent outside Pavillion Shopping Centre. So once again local designers and the industry have been sidelined for some rich elite’s personal pleasure and an event that could have help set the stage to leap to a different level of playing field for some more  designers did not materialise. So instead mega sponsorships were garnered and all for what, for some fancy hoity toity party for bored rich people looking for some more entertainment.

But back to what I really want to say is, when I first heard the word style , I really took the word quite literally to mean personal expression of one’s identity and that could mean anything that one wears where it matters less that one looks slim in an outfit but more that one  feels fully liberated in self expression in the outfit and having fun. However, imagine my consternation at 18, all ready to take on the  world when I came out to the big city and found out that the “stylish and best dressed” in Malaysian society and the rest of the world  is a term usually  reserved for those decked in designer togs with the latest IT bag something or other. And so I have ever since been informally the  anti-thesis of well/best dressed ever since.

But there is hope yet,  for style or being stylo , is not accorded to every designer heeled or clothed. Well dressed most may be  but a fashion icon or real style isn’t for the faint hearted and takes a certain individuality and gumption to stand out and dare be counted.

And I am sure most of you have heard of Anna Piaggi , the very eccentric Italian Vogue editor who attends fashion shows in what might be termed by  the unannointed as weird and bordering on lunacy. Wonder how the  Fashion Police of our local “STAR ” newspaper would describe her outfits? Then there is the late Isabella Blow , who discovered Philip Treacy, the hat designer and Alexander McQueen. She was once British Vogue fashion editor, who usually made a statement with the hats that she wore. These two women and others , dare to be different and they know fashion, in fact Anna Piaggi still dictates the world’s fashion trends, but to them fashion isn’t just about wearing designer clothes , but the attire that they don actually tells a story to them. These are ladies who dare and stood out like Coco Chanel and Katherine Hepburn ( who wore man’s pants way before pants became fashionable for women) , but more practical stylish and chic ladies who make statements these days would probably be  Vanessa Seward  (designer of Azzaro) , Daphne Guinness or Mary Kate Olsen  whom we can relate to.

Every detail from the hairclip right down to the thongs, makes up the recipe and produces the final “outfit”. It reminded me of a scene from “Sex and the City” when SJP aka Carrie Bradshaw lost her Manolo Blahniks at a friend’s housewarming party and her devastation wasn’t just because they were Manolo’s but because , that pair of shoes were part of a concocted outfit that complemented and completed the “outfit”  without which it just wasn’t the same , even if replaced by another pair of Manolos…get it? So Fashion Police wotsay?….

Platforms taken to new heights

May 17, 2008 Author: yetmee | Filed under: Designers, Fashion, Trends

These pictures say a thousand words…platforms aren’t what they used to be, “skyhigh” was how some Spring Summer Fashion shoes were termed as must haves! Fashion designers are getting bolder and aspiring higher it would seem and so shall such fashionistas be borne!

Apparently the super high platforms that have been hitting the runways, have been taken to new levels and was reported as the rage in Japan (see Platforms 1-7 pix) and then the more wearable designer pieces like Lacroix and Alessandro della laqua.Though it seems more than a tad painful to one’s imagination for the new take, there are those who would brave such ‘torment’ to their feet just to make a fashion statement. What height some fashionistas would take to to serve womenkind…. (more…)

Boardroom or Boardwalk, how high should one aspire?

May 5, 2008 Author: yetmee | Filed under: Fashion, Trends

Boardroom or boardwalk?

When it comes to wearing shorts, how high should one aspire? I mean I am a new convert to wearing shorts to work. Altho I must admit that I err on the side of nun- like modesty since my two favorite pairs are just about 1-2 inches slightly above knees. Both black in colour and one has cuffs which according to some fashion experts give it a twist of formality and the other is just straight and very flattering. I wear it mostly for casual dining on girls night out and yeah, even on a date and for work sometimes, I team them up with short and long jackets.

But I would like to know some opinions about an article I read in the STAR metro on sunday ( 4th may 2008) about suitability of wearing shorts to work . The ones that they refer to as “shorts” are about 3 inches from the butt down and a good 6-7 inches from the knees and it is recommended that if in industries that allows for self expression and creativity, a pair of shorts in tweed or wool , with cuffs or without , it is okay . I am not quite sure about that , what do you think? I am dying to show off more of my legs in the boardroom, after I tone ‘em and give ‘em a good shave ( and no , you do not smell sourgrapes here) lols:-).
