Three ways to make money online
by Justin Wong
Issue Date: 15th March 2007

Being a KL-ite is demanding. Not only that we have to pay high rents, we also have to pay for petrol or any public transportation fees, not to forget the toll money. Shopping is also a must, or course, who can live without it. Other than that, what about our entertainment? cinemas, clubbing, paint ball games, futsal games will come out in our monthly bills. There's so much to do, so many things to buy, but the monthly pay is just oh so little. One of the way to make some extra cash is by making money online.

The internet is an exponentially expanding place to do anything and everything, from living a second social life to working on spreadsheets. At this moment, you no longer need a company or license to make money online. If you have a little bit of knowhow and internet access, you can enter a world of earning money from the web. Here are three ways you can consider.

1. Blogging

Pretty much everybody is doing it. All you have to do is write about something you know a lot about, something specific, like photography techniques, celebrity gossip, how to's, etc. These are called niche blogs. You write on your blog regularly, get people to read it, build your traffic, and the money will come from advertisements. For technical details, see this list of articles. The basic preliminary steps are:

- Choose a blog platform, (Blogger, Wordpress, etc.)
- Find a domain name and hosting (recommended)
- Set it up
- Find and implement a good template
- Find an ad-service (Google Adsense, or TextLinks, etc.) and implement
- Start blogging

You posts must be regular and sufficient in content. Use tools on the
internet to help market your content. You can find some tools in
go2web20.net and more help in problogger.net.

2. Sell your old junk

One man's trash is another man's treasure. Selling your stuff online would never have been easier (or possible) without the ground-breaking ebay.com. Go and sort out your old collection of vinyl records, scour your attic for that grandfather clock, or make a coffee stain on your tablecloth that resembles Abraham Lincoln. Yes, people will buy oddities and antiques. I sold my globe before, and that fed me for a day. Malaysian sites: ebay.com.my and lelong.com.my. You can also sell your clothes in the many online shopping sites listed here.

3. Create and sell products

Are you an artist? A novelist? An optimist? Show off your creativity or talent and sell your product online. If you can paint really great pictures, display and sell prints through deviantart.com. If you can write life-changing, self-help books, write an e-book and charge for every download. If you are a songwriter, try musiccanteen.com. If you are a webdesigner, create downloadable templates and charge. The possibilities are limitless. Be creative and go crazy!

There are plenty more ways to earn cash in the vast place called the internet. But at this point it is still difficult making a living out that. So don't quit your day job.
