Strong, Independent Women…And Why They Freak Guys Out

Once I asked one of my guy friends, “Why is it that women who hold powerful positions – such as being managers of a department for example – or even if they earn more than the guy, often find it hard to get guys to date them?” And the answer that he gave me was so.. lame, to say the least that all I could do was stare at him. His answer was simply “It’s a guy thing”. What the heck is that suppose to mean? How are women suppose to sum up anything with such an answer? That doesn’t even fully answer the question!

So after asking around a bit more, the conclusion I can draw up is, if you’re a women holding a high powered position or job and you’re finding it hard to find men who are willing to date you, the reason is this – men don’t want to feel inferior.

But I suppose we can’t really hold it against them for thinking in such a way. It has long since been the mentality that the guy is the provider, the guy should be the one in charge, and the guy should be the one making the decisions. In other words, the guy wants to feel superior, like he is the boss, and he wants to feel he is needed by the girl. Even though times have changed and there is this so called thing were both men and women are equal now, when it comes to relationships, some men are just stuck in that same way of thinking.

No guy wants to feel like the “girl” in the relationship, which is why a lot of them would rather not date a woman who is in a higher position than he is. For example if she is the manager and he is just an ordinary worker, chances are he is not going to want to date her because he’s worried about feeling inferior. So what is a woman to do then? Not take on a high position job for fear of never getting another date? Absolutely not! Why should you have to sacrifice your own career?

The solution? Find men who are more open minded about the matter, because thankfully, there are a some of them out there who have evolved with the times. Here is what I found out by quizzing some of the male friends that I have:

Although there are some men who are OK with the idea dating a women in a higher position, it comes with certain conditions attached. First, the woman must appear humble, friendly and approachable, somebody that the guy would like to get to know. She must appear to treat everyone as equals, and she needs to ditch the superior attitude. If the woman appears to be someone who is high-maintenance, then chances are men are not going to be lining up to ask her out unless he is in an even higher job position than she is.

To put it simply ladies, if you are in a position of higher power than your man, don’t make him feel inferior. Include him in all your decisions, ask for his opinion and show him that it matters, don’t control him or boss him around, and make him feel that you rely on him for certain matters too. In other words, make him feel like an equal and chances are he might be more accepting of dating a woman who is in a higher position than he is.
