Heel No!!!

Remember when Gaga took a tumble and fall when she was walking at the airport in one of her crazy footwear? The boots were simply accident waiting to happen and they are definitely not the running errands or plane-catching kind of shoes. Regardless of how great they look on the cover of Vogue and Elle magazine.

She might be crazy enough to wear them out and about but Gaga is not really the pioneer of fall-hazard heel-less shoes. The idea of heel-less shoes has been pushed into the runway since the interest on architectural and embellished footwear started to grow in the world of fashion. Thanks to shoe designers like Kurt Geiger and Nicholas Kirkwood, the trend in women’s footwear was taken a few notches up. Even the existing fashion houses started to pay more attention to shoes for their seasonal collections.

Marc Jacobs Spring 08

One of the earliest appearances of heel-less shoes on the runway was for Marc Jacobs Spring 2008 collection. Marc introduced the whimsical ‘backward’ heels in color-blocked combinations. The trend didn’t really take off but it was a great first step into the zone of shoes as torture device.

Daphne Guinness in Nina Ricci

In terms of celebrity, Victoria Beckham and Daphne Guinness have both been seen in one of this heel-less shoes. Beckham wore a pair of Antonio Berardi’s heel-less thigh-high boots to her perfume launch back in 2008, while Daphne Guinness was captured by paparazzi walking out of a building in her pair of black Nina Ricci shoes. Unlike Victoria Beckham who was dressed to the nine, Daphne Guinness looked very casual like she’s ready to run around town running errands. Well except for the shoes which added 11-inches to her height.

And recently Gaga rocked a pair of Norika Tatehana boots for her video Alejandro and also the photo shoot for Vanity Fair magazine. The Japanese accessories designer draws inspiration mostly from traditional Japanese culture, particularly ‘Kan Pokkuri’, which are clogs that Japanese kids used to make by passing cords through empty cans. A simple email to Lady GaGa and Norika Tatehana is now part of the heel-less shoes movement.

So heel-less shoes are dangerous. Although some testimonials indicated that they are not as painful, one look at these monsters really made most ballerina-flats fans cringed and run for cover.

What about you?
