Bizarre Fashion

“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” ~ John Fairchild

Oh, the wonders of fashion in all its glory! I’m sure you’ve seen them all – sprawled across the runways, on the high streets and on the red carpets – everything from the good, the bad and the ugly. Since it’s Friday, for a little bit of fun (with a whole lot of wacky!), here are some of the freakiest fashions seen of runways across the world.

Maison Martin Margiela’s Wig-Fest

Forget about luxurious materials from suede to velvet and sexy leather. Maison Martin Margiela chose to use wigs as fabric instead. Its Spring/Summer 2009 show featured models dressed up with wigs covering their faces and even sewed them onto jackets and tops. I don’t know about you, but I honestly feel that the only place a wig should be used is on the head. And on the head only!

Furniture Collection by Hussein Chalayan

I have to admit, this is the first time I seen catwalk furniture! Know what we’ve got here? It’s wearable and portable architecture! Chair covers were designed to transform into modern dresses and there’s even a cutting edge table that doubles up as a skirt. Uber cool for sure but I’m guessing these pieces are not exactly comfy?! It’s no surprise though that Hussein Chalayan has been twice awarded as Designer of the Year…

Pillow Talk with Viktor & Rolf

The Viktor & Rolf  Autumn/Winter 2005 show saw boudoir dressing in a completely different perspective. At the ancient Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord, the models were adorned with… pillows and duvets. Dreamy much? Yes, it’s making me sleepy too! The show was said to be an ode to love, with Tori Amos playing live on the piano, while the bedtime-friendly designs ‘floated’ about…

Wizard of Oz by Gareth Pugh

British designer Gareth Pugh is one of my favourite designers of the moment. Known for his outlandish creations, his Wizard of Oz-inspired spring/summer 2008 show not only opened with bang, but with a dash of eccentricity too…a model emerged from a giant balloon that burst as the music began to play. Oh, did I also mention that she wore a sparkly cube on her face?!?

Alexander McQueen’s Spray Painting Robots

The extremely talented designer might have passed on, but his interesting designs will never be forgotten. The Alexander McQueen’s 1999 spring show was an artsy display which had two robots carry out their best work of graffiti on one of his white tube dresses, worn by a model spinning round on a wooden disc. Talk about making an artistic statement. This one must have been attention-grabbing show indeed.

It’s no surprise we get to see all these exceptional and downright wacky designs. As it’s known, fashion on the runway is not actually meant to be practical, it experimental! Sure, people might not walk on the high streets in these designs, but if you think about, some of them are a pretty fantastic form of art and expression too!

What do you think of these wacky creations?
