Remember when cage heels made its stunning debut on the runways of fall 2008? Yup, those incredibly sexy footwear instantly became a fashion favourite. Soon enough the Alexander Wang Cage Dress took the cage trend a step further; that super-stylish number really did make a statement that is undeniably bold. After taking the fashion world by storm, the trend strutted into the contemporary market- making way for a whole variety of affordable options.

Celebrities who sported the cage dress trend fashionably include Rihanna, AnnaLynne McCord, Cassie and Morena Baccarin. During her promotional concert for her “Rated R” album in London, Ri Ri wore a head-turning cage dress from Funktional. She rocked the black mini dress with fishnet tights and black boots. Rihanna cleverly kept her accessories simple with a pair of studs, some statement rings as well as two silver chain link bracelets. Everything about her look screams incredibly sexy without trying too hard! “Since the focus is on the shoulders, play with statement bracelets, cuffs, and rings to accessorize. For a more dramatic effect, try it with boots — the higher on the thigh, the better,” suggests Ivan Brown, who co-founded StyleQ.com.

What is it about the cage dress that makes it so amazing, you may ask? The modernist architectural lines and fantastic structure are intensely graphic! It is the best way to show some skin in a subtle way- without looking OTT or simply trashy. The cage look can be worn all over too- on the shoulders, at the back or the whole dress.

Because of its bold straps and fabulous grid-like patterns, it is best to keep everything else simple. Pumps, booties or boots would look great when paired up with a cage dress. Try experimenting with hosiery and tights- something that’s not too loud i.e. sheer black hosiery or fishnets. Go for a sheer and bold colour if you dare! Accessorize with bold rings and bracelets; studded or chain-linked ones would work well with the dress.
