Crazy For Barbie
By: hannefI know how much girls love their Barbies. I remember thinking what on earth are they doing with the dolls; getting them undress, brushing their synthetic blonde hair and making them sit in their tiny chairs having weird, lady-like tea parties. But now that I am much older, I totally get it. Barbie doll is like the only chance for all these little girls to play grown up (aside from playing dress up with their mothers’ pearl necklace that is). Some of these girls still have their old Barbie in their bedroom and although it might scare potential boyfriends away, there’s nothing wrong with that. After all, I believe there are full-grown men out there who still sleep on their Star Wars bed sheet.

And then there’s Margaux Lange, an American jewelry designer who creates unique custom and mass produced necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings from salvaged Barbie dolls. This graduate of Maryland Institute College of Art in Bachelor of Fine Arts has been creating her unique brand of jewelry inspired from her childhood obsession of the iconic dolls.

For the past ten years, Lange’s whimsical, tongue in cheek jewelry pieces have garnered a lot of attention and praise from the media evidently from magazines like Time Out New York, New York Times Magazine and Remix.

She has proven that your Barbie doll from 15 years ago can actually do more than just looking pretty on that tiny shelf in your bedroom. They can be turned into pretty jewelry too.
And how cool is that?
