It has been quite a while since we’ve heard anything about Amy Winehouse; I must admit that I am a big fan of hers and I’ve been wondering what she has been up to recently. Well, well, guess what? Amy Winehouse is making a comeback and this time around it’s not with her amazing voice, but as a fashion designer instead! Yes, AMY WINEHOUSE designing a range of clothes- surprised much?

Sure, she might have been dubbed ‘a walking fashion disaster’ by fashion pundits. But on the contrary, three years ago, Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel declared Amy Winehouse as a fashion icon because of the singer’s distinctive style. If you ask me, if that was what Karl Lagerfeld mentioned, then the man has got to be right!  

Psst…in the past, British label Fred Perry have worked together with male stars, including Paul Weller, the Specials’ Terry Hasll and Damon Albarn. Amy Winehouse will be their first ever female collaboration. And if you didn’t know, the classic Fred Perry T-shirt is in fact one of her signature looks. “Amy has been wearing Fred Perry for years, so we were aware she was a genuine fan of the brand,” said Richard Martin, Fred Perry’s marketing director, of the initial pursuit of Winehouse for the design gig. Amy has a unique sense of style that reflects the brand’s own historical reference points. She is a loyal fan of classic Fred Perry product, so that is what the designs were focused on developing,” said Martin.

The 17-piece collection is scheduled for four seasons and the first one will hit stores this coming autumn, in October. The items, in a palette of pink, grey, red and black-truly reflect Amy’s signature retro style with girlish twinsets; slim, thigh-skimming pencil skirts; capri pants, a mini bowling dress, and Fred Perry’s signature polo shirts.

“We had three major design meetings where she was closely involved in product style selection and the application of fabric, color and styling details,” said Martin. He added that pieces such as gingham shirts and the Heritage jacket, another label classic, are the foundation of the lineup. On those items, “Amy gave crucial input on proportion, color and fit,” Martin said. “The range clearly has Amy’s handwriting.”
