Paris Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2010 Highlights
By: hannefParis Fashion Week had recently closed the season on a really high note. The world knows that it is one of the most important events in the fashion calendar because whatever it was being strutted down the runways at the fashion week will shape the way people dress for at least another six months to come.
A lot of designers and attendees at the Paris Fashion Week raved about the return of clean minimalism and power dressing to the scene after so many seasons of Alexander McQueen (RIP) otherworldly creations and Ricardo Tisci of Givenchy futuristic drama. It’s not like there’s anything wrong with all these past collections, but change is always good. After all, that is what fashion is all about.
The minimalism theme was noticeable on Celine’s runway. Phoebe Philo decided to block all outside influence in the process of shaping the idea for this collection. The result is chic-European designs in mostly black and white accented by some textures like feather on the shoes and some leather on the jackets. Same goes with Stella McCartney who’s collection consist of mostly basics and some simple jewel tone dresses with floaty trains. The oversized brown cardigan on Natasha Poly raised a lot of eyebrow as much as the camel jacket which was totally popular among the crowds.

Even edgy, almost gothic designer like Gareth Pugh somehow follows the simplicity route. The dark and heavy black make up balanced out the old Hollywood glamour elements injected to the garments. Leather, high collar and other recognizable Gareth Pugh designs aesthetic are still intact but this time around it is more about beauty than scary.
At Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld decided to ship iceberg from the Arctic to create a scene which according to him was ‘something that he saw in his dream’. The models paraded down the slippery runways in lots and lots of faux fur and the usual Chanel tweeds and pearls. The fashion crowd reacted differently to the fur pants but mostly loved Lagerfeld’s ‘snow bunnies’.
Although Valentino is no longer part of the creative team, his delicate and elegant touch still continue on. But this time around the chiffons and ruffles are blended together with leather to create texture. The leather added the element of strength to the rather fragile chiffons in soft color and blended in nicely with the whole power dressing theme of the fashion week.
Marc Jacobs closed the season with his ultra-feminine collection for Louis Vuitton. After last summer of over the top afro and fox tail bags, he decided to go with 50s glamour, which according to him was ‘a no brainer’. He simply wanted to celebrate elegance and timeless beauty which reflected on his choice of models. Seeing bustier and ‘normal-looking’ models walking down the runway was definitely something these hungry fashion people had been waiting for. The clothes from the dresses to the shoes and bags are simply breath-taking.
Looks like another successful season for Paris Fashion Week. Can’t wait for the next one.
