Preen Fall 2010

The design duo Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi started off the floral theme for Preen Fall 2010 collection with inspiration from New Order’s Power, Corruption & Lies album cover. But they later decided to add a touch of masculinity in the tailoring which instantly blended with one another to create a totally different look.

Preen Fall 2010 is all about combining drapery, cut outs and structured silhouette to achieve a series of look that is almost  effortless but tastefully revealing in the right places. The drapery as seen on most floral dresses captures the softness of the feminine elements, but the use of color like black helps it to blend well with bits and pieces of menswear elements attached to it, for instance the turtleneck, trench coats and jackets. The cut-outs and shreds are tastefully done by revealing just enough skin to keep the sophistication level on check. At times, it seems like the garments are falling off from the body to reveal a shoulder, a little bit of chest and the back. The menswear elements were prominent in balancing the fragile and delicate floral and lace dresses. It also lends a dash of attitude to each looks.

The best look has to be the first one that started off the show. The draped floral dress worn with cropped turtleneck instantly gives us a little preview of what the whole collection is all about. Long dresses with bustier top instantly added drama and a touch of class to some rather plain looking dresses. As the show progressed, more colors are being incorporated such as lavender, beige, neon green and dark purple. Same goes with the use of fabrics like lace, wool and silk.

It was definitely a beautiful collection with some very wearable pieces. Although fashion designers always hated it when people label their work as wearable, Preen Fall 2010 doesn’t disappoint both, the designer and the clients by capturing just enough drama and conventionality.
