Not Gonna Write You A Lovesong
By: hannef
One question that people couldn’t stop asking today for sure is ‘How was your Valentine’s Day?’ Some of us would say it was all about candies, chocolates, roses, dinner and of course, a significant other to celebrate with, if you were lucky that is. I am not saying that we, singletons are out of luck and we are not bitter either. But in the sea of married people, girlfriends and boyfriends, we tend to get lost and we just want to hear our voices loud and clear.
So we stayed at home and had our stereo on instead. But we were not weeping with a box of chocolates and Ben & Jerry on standby, we were celebrating in our own way to these sounds. We were celebrating our break from those nasty relationships release from controlling and needy girlfriend/boyfriend and we were announcing our arrivals for the next chapter in love.
Here are the sounds of love freedom:
1. I’m Not In Love- 10cc
This is a song about telling someone to leave you alone because apparently your phone calls and the picture on the wall don’t mean a single thing to you.
2. You Ought To Know-Alanis Morisette
Angry as a mad-dog could be but we’re allowed to feel that way. Not the whole time tho’.
3. I Never Really Loved You Anyway- The Corrs
4. Song For The Dumped-Ben Fold Five
With lyrics like, ‘Wish I hadn’t bought you dinner right before you dumped me on your front porch… and don’t forget to give me back my black T-Shirt’ this is THE song for those who had just gotten out of a bad relationship. It’s a song that we should all be listening to at least once right before we finally move on with our lives.
5. Untouchable Face-Ani DiFranco
The way Ani DiFranco sang neutralizes the strong message of the song. Even the frequent use of F-word in the lyrics somehow seems to be okay. It’s like telling someone to go to hell but in a very polite way. ‘Who am I that I should be vying for your touch? Who am I? I bet you can’t even tell me that much’
6. Somebody That I Used To Know- Elliot Smith
‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ is about learning to finally let go. In the end the memories will stay but we just have to move on. ‘I know you don’t think you did me wrong and I can’t stay this mad for long keeping a hold of what you just let go. You’re just somebody that I used to know.’
So there you have it. But if you are on cloud nine, here are the songs for you:
1. Like A Star- Corinne Bailey Rae
2. Ice- Cream- Sarah McLachlan
3. Promise I Make- Dakota Moon
4. Tell Me What We’re Gonna Do Now- Joss Stone feat. Common
5. Yellow- Coldplay
6. Haven’t Met You Yet- Michael Buble
