Beauty 101: Boo Boo Beauty Habits!
By: aphrodite
Yup, it’s true that nobody’s perfect! But did you ever realize that your naughty little beauty habits of picking, chewing and overstyling does no justice at all for your skin, hair and nails? Here are a few deadly beauty sins and how you can correct them.
Hair Twirling
Don’t be all do this absentmindedly?! It might be a playful gesture and all that twirling and tossing might impress that guy you have your eye on but you need to STOP! This act could lead to hair breakage and even small bald patches if you are not careful. Ladies experiencing high levels of stress can run the risk of getting a condition known as trichotillomania (the pulling out of hair) which would then need to be treated by a trichologist (hair expert). So I suggest you quit playing with your crowning glory– if you want gorgeous locks that is!

Lip Chewing
If you constantly licking and biting your lips, it will only leave you with dry, cracked and flaky lips that are not only unattractive, but totally uncomfortable as well. Pulling of and picking at the flakes on your lips will cause it to bleed! Whoever wants a bleeding, sore pucker?? If your pout is dry and flaky, try this:
Apply a thick coat of lip balm and let it sit for a good 20 minutes. This will help to soften the skin which will then be so much easier to remove.
Use a lip scuff or a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently brush off the dead skin and wipe the particles off with a tissue.
Follow up with a rich lip cream to nourish and prevent further drying!

Nail Biting
As much as bitten and chewed nails look gross and is really painful, many of us just can’t help ourselves from doing it! Experts say that nail biting is a common reaction to stress, boredom and often poor self-esteem. It can spread oral herpes to fingers and even cause severe dental problems and gingivitis. It’s best to try to kick this habit by:
Snap a rubber band on the inside of your wrist each time the nail biting urge occurs.
Wear gloves or coat your nails in a foul-tasting substance that will stop you from chewing them. Vinegar might do the job here.
If all else fails, get artificial nails! They’re practically impossible to gnaw on-unless you have vampire-ish fangs of course!

Squinting and Frowning
You do know that constant frowning and squinting will make you look like a totally cranky puss right? This act of yours might cause permanent furrows to your forehead and I’m pretty darn sure you wouldn’t want to look like that forever-even when your face is rested, you’ll still look like a sour face; and a sour face does not equate to a pretty face! To prevent ugly frown lines, try and RELAX. When you feel like you are about to frown, close your eyes and take three deep breaths instead.

Squeezing Spots
Don’t ever squeeze and pick at your face with dirty, unwashed fingers! Most dermatologists would agree that that having spots squeezed by a professional is OK. So the question is, what do you do when there’s a huge zit on your face? Your skin need to be warmed up properly- cleansed then warmed. Wait until the spot has a whitehead on it then hold a warm wet cotton ball over the spot and squeeze…very gently; avoid using sharp objects (like your fingernails..ahem!) to prevent permanent scarring. Help the healing process with anti-blemish treatments or tea-tree oil.
