Beauty 101: Super Tips for Hot Lips!
By: aphrodite
As much as you’d love to go barefaced, a lip product (whether it’s plain ol’ lip balm, the conventional lippie, lustrous gloss or trendy lip stains) is one thing you should try not to go without! A smooth and pretty looking pucker is always a winner and it’ll simply brighten up your face anytime. Slap on some colour and moisture on your way out to college, work, meeting your buds and of course when you are going out on a hot date! Here’s a lil’ lippie lowdown for you:
Yup, I’m pretty sure we all remember our very first few experiences with lipstick. Chances are, (just like me) you were seated in front of mummy’s dressing table; smearing her red lipstick all over your mouth, without any clue what-so-ever on application techniques!
These days however, lip colours are a little more complicated simply because we are totally spoilt for choice- all those formulations and thousands of delicious colours! In our teens, we probably stuck to flavoured lip balm and lip gloss. But when it’s time to move on and graduate to lipstick, a slick of red can inject the confidence boost you really need, a touch of pink can make you feel feminine and a slap of orange can really brighten up your day!
How to pick out your lipcolour?
- It really is completely up to you as to which colour you want to go for.
- The shades are generally divided into six main colour categories: red, pink, coral, plum, brown and pinky brown.

- It doesn’t matter what colour your eyes or hair is, the colour that will suit you best really depends on your skin tone.
- Choose the colour category you are after, then hold up a selection of shades in front of you. You’ll know which ones are best when it makes your skin glow up. Stay away from the particular hue if you look dull, peaky or washed out.
Prime Time!
- You might have the most amazing lipstick shade in your hands, but wait! Don’t put it on just yet. Turn your lips into a luscious sight with a little prep up.
- Exfoliate your lips with a toothbrush or lip scruff to ensure that you don’t have chapped and flaky bits of dead skin cells around.
- Slick on a generous layer of lip balm and leave it on for a couple of minutes before removing the excess with a tissue.

Longer Lasting Lipcolour!
- We’ve all complained about this before: “My lipstick never stays on long enough!” Depending on the formula, matte lippies have more pigment in them as compared to sheer lipsticks.
- To get the most out of your tube, the secret is to fill your lips in with a neutral coloured (or one that matches your lipstick) lip liner.
- This will help to make your lippie last about two to three times longer than usual and it will also give you the illusion of a fuller pout.
- Don’t go for a lip liner that is darker that you lipstick! You’ll be left with an ugly ring of bright colour around your lip line.

Draw the line!
- Rest your elbow on your bathroom basin or any other steady surface and gently trace the outline of your lips with the point of the liner.
- If you feel your hands are wobbly, try dotting it along the line, then joining the together, or use short feathery strokes instead of a long one.
- Once you are done with the outline, fill in the rest using the side of the pencil for a more even colour application.
Paint on that Pout!
- Start at the centre of your lip and go outwards, stopping just before you reach the corners. You van then apply straight from the tube, continue using a lip brush, or dab the colour onto your lips with your finger to create a stain effect instead.
- Once you have applied, press your lips together and then blot with a tissue to remove excess colour (or it’ll just end up on your teeth!)
- You can then apply another layer of lipstick or dab on a little bit of gloss on the middle to give the illusion of fuller lips. Don’t forget to take along your lipstick and a compact mirror with you on your way out; it’s a must to touch up throughout the day!
Cool Tips:
- Thin lips? Stay clear of very dark, dramatic colours, as they will only emphasize this. Head towards lighter and glossier colours!
- The classic red lipstick is always sexy! If you are fair of medium skin toned, go for a orange-red colour. For those with olive or deeper complexions, you can surely get away looking awesome with really bright-blue shades.

- Orange lippies suit most ladies and also look fabulous on those with freckles! Just make sure you keep it glossy instead of matte.
- Deeper shades like plums or browns look great, but because they are so intense, you just need to tone down the rest of your make-up and keep it simple everywhere else on your face.
