Norah Jones: The Fall
By: hannef
One of the most memorable albums of the recent years has to be 2002’s “Come Away With Me”, a solid debut from then newcomer, Norah Jones. The album was certified diamond with more than 10 million copies sold worldwide.
After two follow-ups which both shot straight to number one, 36 million albums sold worldwide and eight Grammy Awards, Norah Jones is back with her fourth studio album, “The Fall”. Working this time around with Jacquire King, whose work includes albums by Kings of Leon and Modest Mouse; singer- songwriter, Ryan Adams; fellow Texan indie rocker, Will Sheft along with long-time friend and producer, Jesse Harris , Norah Jones digs deep inside her musical roots and discovers her new sound. There are still traces of bluesy- jazz from her first album and a little bit of country from “Feels Like Home” and “Not Too Late” but for “The Fall” she experiments with rockier and edgier sounds. She talked about how she finds it quite difficult to write songs for the album on guitar instead of the piano. She decided to give it a go because she wanted to come out with something different for the album.
The lead single, “Chasing Pirates” beautifully sums up the whole content of the album. It’s the same Norah Jones sound that we love but with a little bit of attitude. Even the video clip doesn’t really echo what Norah Jones has done in the past. There are of course some moments of honesty and vulnerability in the album with songs like ‘You’ve Ruined Me”, “Stuck” and “I Wouldn’t Need You”. “Back to Manhattan” on the other hand is a song cleverly written to tell the story about her move to New York and the sudden change of environment.
“The Fall” is overall a wholesome album and the fact that Norah Jones decided to go on a slightly different direction on each albums, makes her music fresh with some surprise elements that keeps people waiting in anticipation of her next musical direction. As she once said to the press, “I haven’t figured out what kind of music I wanted to do yet”. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

U’re welcome. Unfortunately, the album only peaked at no.3 on Billboard. Thx to Susan Boyle.
