Alicia Keys sings to our hearts

R&B crooner Alicia Keys has recently collaborated with the online jewellery website, The Barber’s Daughters to co-design a line for their Fall collection. Inscribed with heartfelt mini messages, it is certainly one way to give someone special a personal message which they can wear wherever they go.

When asked to choose a favorite piece from her collection of handcrafted necklaces co-created with The Barber’s Daughters designer Gisele Theriault, it was difficult for the singer to make a decision. “They’re all so beautiful,” the Grammy award-winning R&B singer said. “I definitely love the one we chose [to benefit Keep A Child Alive, for] the Black Ball. It says, ‘The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others,’ which is a Gandhi quote – which I love.” Items from the Fall 2010 line range in price between US$85 to US$2,500, but each is inscribed with inspirational sayings which Alicia and Gisele collaborated on choosing. “We both love words,” Alicia explained. “She’s a great writer and I love to write.” In fact, it wasn’t even until Alicia met Gisele through her band mates that Alicia got the idea to design.

“In regards to her jewellery, how it can spread such an uplifting message – I love the fact that that’s the focus of the pieces. Of course they’re beautiful aesthetically, but the purpose is more how the words influence us.” Now that she has a taste of design, would she ever branch into apparel line or even fragrance? “Sure, the world is endless and possible – as long as it resonates with that message,” Alicia emphasised.
