There are times in fashion when people are crazy about quadruple layering, piling on the accessories, chunky scarves and heavy prints, but in the end they always go back to the most overused mantra in fashion world and that is ‘less is more’.

Jil Sander is all about that. Each season, the line’s creative director, Raf Simons always keeps each and every look presented on the runways to the barest minimum in terms of the designs, colors, silhouette and fabrics. The great thing about his design is although everything is basic, he always has some surprise elements to keep it fresh and remarkable. Raf Simons stint at Jil Sander so far had seen him set the trend for color-block jackets, marble print suits; armor cut trench and see-through shirts. Even celebrity like Kanye West was seen wearing his designs on several different occasions.

For Spring 2010, Jil Sander introduces elements of Japanese, drawing inspiration from a Japanese- French painter Tsuguharu Foujita. Foujita paintings. The pastel colored paintings lend some colors to the rather pale canvas of the collection. Although some fashion critics dubbed the collection as “taking minimalism too literally” and “being under designed”, it still managed to take the elements of minimalism and futuristic to another level and sum up what Jil Sander is all about.

There are still people out there who live by the mantra of ‘more is more’ and think that there is nothing appealing about basic short sleeved shirts and a pair of black pants. But don’t forget the difference a pair of well-cut pants and good quality shirts with a little touch of color can do for you.

During these complicated times, we need simpler outfits to balance things out without compromising fashion. So I have to say that for now, it is definitely more about Jil Sander and less about Galliano.
