Prabal Gurung Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear

Prabal Gurung is definitely a name that really grabs attention. First of all, we don’t even know how to pronounce it and secondly, it is kind of mysterious because it doesn’t really give away much about the person behind it. But for celebrities like Thandie Newton and Leighton Meister, Prabal Gurung is their new designer du jour.

After years of experience at Cynthia Rowley and Bill Blass, (before Peter Som took over) Gurung is finally ready to rule the catwalk with his own designs. His first collection for fall 2009 was inspired by New York women with commanding and strong attitude. The looks from the collection are very clear cut yet at the same time suggests power.

For his new Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear collection, Prabal Gurung drew inspirations from  YSL Rive Gauche perfume bottle from the seventies. He was drawn to the perfume packaging and decided to play around with the idea. The result is an enticing overflow of 26 garments with draping, bows, ribbons and origami-like patterns.

The color palette of the collection is basic black and white with slight hints of primary colors like blue and red. Although the initial inspiration was packaging, the simplicity of the color palette prevents Gurung’s designs from literally looking like gift wrappers. The cocktail dresses are mostly one-shouldered, backless with sideway draping accentuated with cute little bows on the train and shoulder. The unusual positioning of the bows and ribbons (on the jacket lapel and pants cuffs) make each garments from the collection look really special like carefully wrapped gifts with full of surprises.

Prabal Gurung Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear collection is definitely perfect for playful younger woman who love to have cute little touches on their outfits. They are severely chic with slight hints of sexiness but have this whimsical touch that keeps it fun. Can’t wait for what he has in store next season.
