There have been some comments have been that this movie is nothing more than a cut and paste of videos and events out for a quick buck, but please note that to date , the accompanying record is climbing charts as best album the week of its worldwide release. A friend  was raving  to  me the day before I watch the movie about his ”Dangerous” concert , and how groundbreaking it was and I now believe him. I have to admit all the scandals over the past decade has eroded my opinion somewhat about him and his talent.  I too had moments when I am a judgmental fan  who thinks he is a passe artist with a troubled life , even though I sympathised having read how tough celebrity life is. But this is a movie to watch,  fan or not and catch little insights to a great person…At the start I couldn’t help but be sceptical as to how much was drug induced talk and how much was real especially when he went into his love and peace mode. But that scepticism  is my issue not his…

10 reasons to go watch this movie if you need any:

1) Yes, you do really get to see the King in action, whenever he comes in for the rehearsal.

2) Yes, it is real and more so when you watch the dancers real people working hard and really greatful for the opportunity to work with the King Of Pop especially when times are real tough for a pro dancer.

3) Yes, he’s did still have the moves , albeit sometimes he was a little out of breath (not surprising when you know his medical history and his age) but, yes, he is still well worth watching.

4) Yes, you can watch and learn why he was so great in his hey days and why even as the rehearsal was going on and we now know he was beset by sleepless nights and high dosage medications when the King speaks, he rarely bellows, in fact he is apologetic for any  need for a move to be rehearsed again…he will jokingly say”…that’s why we have rehearsals….” in his sweet childlike voice.

5) He is precise and knows exactly where every note should end and begin. One will get that this is his stage and what he says goes not because he is MJ , King of Pop but because he loves his music and he has a vision of how every note should end and how it is to be translated on stage for the audience.  There are rare moments on on the movie when it shows his tenacicty and persistence in getting his own way and why it matters that he puts his foot down and not moonwalk around the issue.

6) He was a great man because he is not stingy with giving opportunities to young people, in one scene , he encouraged young guitarist,  23 year old Orianthi from Australia, to keep picking at a higher note because this is her “…moment to shine…”  he said.

7)  He ’s still got the moves….yeap, watching him on big screen made it real for me. His traditional more refined and almost elegant moves when combined with the new version choreography and beefier dancers also makes you realized  how rare he was. When I watched him dance, I know there will be no other Michael Jackson, even though his instructions to his dancers were to be an exact extension of him if I am not mistaken. Watch it and let me know won’t you.

8)  You get that people are comfortable with him, that this film  isn’t so make believe, even though director Kenny Ortega speaks to him in a polite almost patronising, adult to child tone…

9)You feel a sense of protection for him, for his fragility, his earnesty, his love for music, his music, his songs; when he is perfoming, everything  else seems unimportant  except that moment, that is how much he loved performing and how much one can enjoy watching him perform.

10) Lastly, to know him is to love him, The King Of Pop….this is it or rather was it.

This movie is on for two weeks only in cinemas in  Kuala Lumpur.
