Lindsay Lohan’s Emanuel Ungaro fashion debut
By: CherrypopMost of us would have already heard by now that infamous party girl LiLo has signed up to be artistic advisor for Emanuel Ungaro. It was hoped that she would bring a cooler vibe to the fashion house, though essentially its style will still remain the same. This news was a rather unexpected one but with the fashion label itself being one of controversy, this latest piece of news was bound to stir up some opinions.
For his part, Ungaro CEO Mounir Moufarrige is ecstatic at the prospect of turning the stagnant Ungaro brand into a consumer-led powerhouse with a dynamic design team that is sure to fuel a paparazzi frenzy. He himself is no stranger to controversy, having replaced Karl Lagerfeld at Chloé in 1997 wit Stella McCartney, who had just presented her graduate collection at Central Saint Martins.
The house of Ungaro was originally founded by Emanuel Ungaro in 1964, and was renowned for its chic and over-the-top La Parisienne style, mixing bright colours, animals prints and multicoloured floral suits and day-dresses, with slinky, fluid, Oriental allure for evening. Ungaro worked for many years with the famed Cristobal Balenciaga, before starting off on his own, and remains one of the very few with links to the late Spanish maestro. He retired in 2004.
Plenty of critics have slammed Lindsay’s involvement in the label with her and Spanish designer Estrella Archs debuting their collection at the recent Paris Fashion Week. Wrote the New York Times: “Emanuel Ungaro was a couture king of drape and shape. When a swath of white dress was covered with a white fur stole, there was some attempt to move from teen night out to a couture elegance. Yet will this collection of hearts but with no soul be enough to entice young women who could probably find these looks anywhere?”
The Los Angeles Times newspaper weren’t kind either: “When Lohan came out for a runway bow, her eyes were full of tears. And it’s easy to see why. After all the hullabaloo over her appointment a month ago, with some fashion insiders suggesting it was an insult to anyone who had ever really worked in design, it had to have been the walk of shame to end all.”
All we can say is that it was a brave attempt. See for yourself and let us know what you think of the collection!
