Western Digital-Backing It Up!

By: hannef

I remember in one episode of Sex and The City when Carrie got really panicky hen a ‘sad- Mac’ suddenly appeared on her computer screen while she was working on her column. It turned out that her hard drive was corrupted and the worst part is she had never backed up any of her documents.

Carrie’s data was never recovered. But thanks to the new products by Western Digital (WD), we can avoid the same unfortunate circumstance. My Book Essential and My Book for Mac are their brand new products while and My Passport Essential is the latest update of the originals. It comes in smaller and sleeker package. All three products are equipped with the new WD Smart Ware software with hardware-based encryption. The price for each product varies according to the storage sizes capacity.

At the WD’s My Book Essential, My Book for Mac and My Passport Essential event at Library, The Curve on 29 September 2009, Margaret Koh (Western Digital Asia South’s Director of Sales) and Jeff Chen (Western Digital Product Marketing and Manager) officially launch the product with the mission of making data backup easier for their consumers and doing it in style with the colorful and sleek design of My Book Essential, My Book for Mac and My Passport Essential. According to research firm Parks Associates, the average U.S. broadband household currently has over 120 gigabytes (GB) of digital media and files, which is expected to grow to over 1 terabyte (TB) of data by 2013. But the scary fact is only 70 percent of consumers back up their content; the majority of these people are using manual, cumbersome methods such as copying and pasting to multiple CDs and DVDs, and less than 18 percent use software that automatically and continuously backs up their content. My Book Essential, My Book for Mac and My Passport Essential are about to change this current situation and make things easier.

I’m not sure if Carrie really did use the old, bulky hard drive that Aidan (her boyfriend at the time) gave her but she will definitely be using this one. These new products from WD come in sleeker and more stylish color options; Midnight Black for My Book Essential and My Book for Mac plus four additional colors for My Passport Essential which includes Pacific Blue, Real Red, Cool Silver and Arctic White. The new My Passport Essential drives are also more than 20 percent smaller than the previous generation.

All three devices run on WD Smart Ware software with hardware-based encryption which provides a very friendly user interface. The backup process is presented visually which can help their less IT- savvy users to fully utilize the devise. One feature that separates My Book Essential, My Book for Mac and My Passport Essential from other data storage device in the market is it will automatically and continuously back up data from your computer as they are being edited or added. It means that the users will not miss even a single data in the back up process. These three products also feature user-selected password protection combined with military-grade 256-bit hardware encryption, which scrambles files before they are stored. We can always be sure that our “private” files are backed up and fully secure.

The new My Book Essential drives are offered in capacities of 500 GB, 1 TB, 1.5 TB and 2 TB while the new My Passport Essential drives are offered in capacities of 320 GB, 500 GB and 640 GB; My Passport Essential SE drives are offered in capacities of 750 GB and 1 TB. My Passport for Mac drives are available with 320 GB and 500 GB. The price for My Book Essential starts from RM 299.00 for 500 GB up to RM 899.00 for 2 TB. As for My Passport the price ranges from RM 319.00 for 320 GB and it goes up to RM 799.00 for My Passport Essential SE with 1 TB capacities.

The launch event for these three products at Library, The Curve was very informational especially for someone like me who never really back up stuff. One visual presentation and buffet lunch later, I headed home from the event and started to think about the amount of data that I have stored in my computer. I wish I won the lucky draw at the event and got myself one of those nifty portable hard drives to back up my data. Unlike Carrie, I don’t need anyone to give it to me as a present. I will get one for myself.
