Pink is Totally In–This Month!
By: Rachel Desiree
Did you know that October is internationally known as Breast Cancer Month? Yup, it’s a whole month full of pink, pink, pink! Here’s a great excuse for you to get girly, so go ahead and inject some “pinkiness” into your wardrobe missy.
The Estée Lauder Group of Companies Malaysia has been actively promoting early detection of breast cancer since 1997. In the last 12 years, more than half a million Breast Self Examination (BSE) instructional cards and pink ribbons have been distributed by the company. Wow! The beneficial cause has raised a whopping RM1.2mil for the Breast Cancer Welfare Association, College Of Radiology Malaysia, National Cancer Society and most recently, the Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation. Check out the various fund-raising and activities for the campaign this year.
Wear a ribbon. Get involved.
We can turn the world pink.
We can save so many lives.

Pink Ribbon Estee Lauder Lip Set for RM 80
You know the ever-so famous Pink Ribbon? Well, it was Mrs. Evelyn Lauder, Senior Corporate VP Estée Lauder Companies, and then editor of Self magazine, Alexander Penny who designed the worldwide symbol of breast health. The Pink Ribbon distributed by the Estée Lauder Companies goes green this year! made entirely from recycled material, fusing the message of hope and breast cancer awareness with the growing movement towards sustainability.
This year happens to be the 10th Anniversary of the Global Landmark Illumination Initiaves and the illumination of more than 200 global landmarks in pink lights in the name of breast cancer! Amoung them are, Taiwan’s Taipei 101 Tower, Shanghai’s Nan Pu Bridge, Niagara Falls in Canada, the Sydney Opera House, Empire State
Building in New York, the leaning tower of Pisa, the Tower of London and our very own Menara Kuala Lumpur.
In line with the Estee Lauder Companies Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign 2009, five of our local talented designers have created an outstanding gown each which will be up for auction at the Charity Gala Dinner And Auction on Oct 24 at Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur.
The designers include Eric Choong, Khoon Hooi, Ridzuan Bohari, Carven Ong, Datuk Tom Abang Saufi with their dresses based on the theme “Vintage Glamour”.
Datuk Tom Abang Saufi
Datuk Tom Abang Saufi came up with a girly, floor-sweeping gown made from silk chiffon material in the pretty shade of pink. This versatile piece surprisingly comes with a detachable collar and bejeweled with stones to glam up the stunning gown.
Khoon Hooi
This number immediately spells out “simplicity at its best”! The one-shouldered silk chiffon dress was drawn up from him being inspired by Grecian Romanticism. Khoon Hooi as with all of the other designers adds a little glitz to the gown with crystal embellishment on his admirable piece.
Eric Choong
Having been inspired by Audrey Hepburn, Choong created a beautiful one-shouldered, silk satin and tulle dress in a matte pink tone with French lace and Swarovski crystal detailing. You will interestingly find baby pink silk satin ribbons and crystallised gems on the top part of the gown. “The ribbons are a symbol of breast health while the crystals provide light and hope in finding a cure for breast cancer,” said Choong.
Ridzuan Bohari
This light pink gown made from chiffon is an instant head-turner that will give you a timeless, vintage feel. The best part about this gown? The individually hand-painted appliqué roses which were painstakingly crafted to enable a stunning three-dimension effect!
Carven Ong
Drawing inspiration from the wonderful splendor and femininity, Carven Ong’s design is a one that is calls for attention from it’s vibrancy of the magenta and pink colour. With chiffon used for the skirt and pink organza for the bodice, both were combined together by a beaded, inverted-V panel in the middle.
