Express way to loose weight at Contours Express

Once upon a time ago, Karen signs up for gym membership. She was very excited over the prospects of getting a gym membership because all the cool kids have one and she can finally start losing weight. Of course, being in college at that time, she had classes, assignments and stuff like that, but still manages to find time for gym (Well, for the first few months….). Check out her gym schedule below:

May 2007: Frequency of going to the gym: 3 times a week

June – August 2007: Frequency of going to the gym: 2 times a week

September 2007: Frequency of going to the gym: 1 time a week

October – December 2007: Frequency of going to the gym: 2 times a month

January 2008: Frequency of going to the gym: Didn’t go at all!

February-March 2008: Frequency of going to the gym: 2 times a month

April 2008: Frequency of going to the gym: Never!

May 2008: Finally quit gym…

Story of my life.

Every time someone signs up for gym, they will be so excited, like myself. A gym membership, means I can start living a healthy lifestyle. Go for classes, use the machines, carry weights…etc. Let’s just say the first few weeks was super exciting and I was so excited and “gung ho” to loose all my fats. My main motivation was to loose weight and see the results.

Months passes by and the visits lessens….

“Why never go to the gym anymore?”

“Busy lah!”

One main reason why people stop going to the gym is because of time constraints. People go to the gym less because of work commitments, family time and having the need to socialize.

For me, I found myself loosing interest in the prospects of going to a gym because whenever I go to the gym, I usually don’t know what I am doing. I really have no idea how to use those machines. It is not like I can afford a personal trainer as they are very expensive. If I could afford it, would be great, but how many of us actually would fork out that much money to get a personal trainer all the time.

I usually go on a  machine, put it to like 5-10kg weights and start doing it. I don’t know how many times I should do it and spend mindless hours in the gym trying to figure out how to use these machines. For the most bit, I usually find myself in pain afterwards because I carried too heavy or in a wrong manner. Then I stay in pain, wallowing for the next few days. My motivation would then lessen because really, how to go gym the next day when body in pain like that?

So the other day, I was introduced to try out this gym called Contours Express. According to my source, all we need to do in this gym is workout for 29 minutes a day and we will see results in no time!

Off I go to try out this gym located at Kota Damansara. It is located in a shoplot on the third floor. So to get up to the gym itself would be a workout. Once I arrived, I was greeted by the friendly trainer named Tini. She got me settled in and asked me to put my stuff in the locker.

After that, I was greeted by Radziah. Before anyone can start at the gym, they’d have to go for a body fat analysis. I was super scared to go for this check as I know I have too much body fat for me to handle (shall not be disclosed!). This was done to gauge how much effort and time we need to put for the workout. For an additional amount of money, I also got a weight management plan where the trainer predicted how much calories i need to eat and how much i need to exercise to reach my desired weight goal. She then introduced me to the concept of the gym at Contours Express. The reason why it was called “express” was because the whole routine only takes 29 minutes each day and the best part of it, the routine was specially designed for women.

29 minutes, seriously?

Yeap, you heard it right. Contours Express’ system allows you to exercise for 29 minutes per day. So if you’re a busy woman and always in a hurry, hop in the gym and out within an hour and you’re set. Within that 29 minutes, you will get a whole body workout from strength training, cardio and flexibility, each machine at Contours Express is specially picked and arranged with a system where no one will actually have to wait for a machine at one time. Each person will start at the beginning and after 45 seconds, the music will change and you too will have to change stations.

Don’t worry about not knowing how to use the machines. The friendly trainers will always be around to coach you and teach you the proper way to use the specially made machines.

And another time….

This routine will last for 29 minutes. There are about 16 or so stations for you to go on twice and each will target different body parts and muscles of the body.

If you’re the type that is very shy to exercise in front of the other sex, this gym is perfect for you. Before entering the gym, there would be a sign outside stating “No Men Allowed!”. Each and everyone inside, including trainers are ladies, so you don’t have to feel intimidated by men. Furthermore, the state of the art machines at this gym is designed specially to fit women’s body frame, which are generally smaller than men. The weights on the machines are also broken down into smaller fractions as women usually don’t need such heavy lifting, well unless they’re part of the body building Olympic team!

Cardio bicycles and elliptical machines for your workout.

With a combination of cardio, strength and flexibility workout, the machines and routine varies as you go along. There would be a step board (see below) in between the weights machine and you’d have to run up and down the board and do some aerobic exercise on the board. The aerobic routine also changes every 2 months or so. This is to ensure that the gym-goer does not get bored of the routines.

As you go along, the trainer at the gym will monitor your progress using a progress card. Each member gets one and as you go to the gym at all time, the trainer in charge jot down your weight and write down your heart rate to check your exercise level. After 6 weeks, the personal trainer will check and give you an update of how you’re coming along to reach your goals.

Don’t worry of you’re a busy 25 year old lady, a 45 year old mother of 3 or a 75 year old grandmother, the exercise routine is easy on the bones and there are levels of intensity which is varied for each unique individual. Contours Express has a wide range of women in the gym, including a 75 year old lady with osteoarthritis who can go through the 29 minutes of exercise in a breeze, while I suffer through the first round. I have no stamina at all and with a little exercise daily, this all can be improved, according to Radziah.

While I was there, I managed to meet a 30 something lady who started in February  - 78kg, went to Contours Express to workout for 3-4 times a week, 29 minutes daily and within 5 months, she has lost 12 kg which puts her now at 66 kg! Her total body fat has also reduced drastically. She says its not easy, but with a lot of effort, she managed! With a lot of diligence exercising and checking on what you need to eat daily, you can achieve your desired weight. It only takes a lot of effort and desire to stay healthy. Of course, she also has to control what she eats and eat within the calorie count.

    2. I’m working now, rather busy and 29 minutes is PERFECT for me
    3. I’ve read about the concept of “circuit” training which seems to be the concept applied by Contours Express.. focusing on anaerobic exercises for weight training w cardio for fat burning. Short spurts of intense focus on one muscle group at a time coupled with cardio turns you into one lean mean fat burning machine, yo!
    4. I’ve read about it, been dying to try it — but severely lacking in equipment here.

    Do let me test out the hypothesis of intense anaerobic + cardio training = fat burning machine? ;)

  3. It really sounds like an awesome weigh loss plan!!
    29 mins per session?! That’s what I need, a short & precise workout session to lose my excess fats on my flabby thighs & calves; tone up my arms too.
    It’s also quite near my place, I could head for a workout after work, before I head home.A destressing session would probably do me some good after a busy workday. :) Short yet frequent workout sessions can be fit in to my working schedule, and I get to lose weight?! Can’t wait to try! I need to get rid of cellulite!!

    Plus, a 29 mins session is really tempting with all the benefits it has to offer, not to mention that my BMI will be monitored.. Lol, I would feel pressured to keep eating properly. Hopefully.. XD
