Season of Fruit
By: adamgaffey
Last week was a busy week for me as my parents were down at Kuala Lumpur from Australia. With my thorough itinerary-planning, it was an amazing experience for them as this was the first time here. 2 weeks before their arrival, I have listed down all the activities to be done during their stay. On top of the list was definitely trying a wide array of unique Malaysian cuisine and of course, the tropical fruits.
Back home at Griffith my parents enjoy planting a variety fruits, such blood orange, plum, lime, persimmon, apple, pear, grape, peach and apricot. They take pleasure in growing these fruits and harvesting them. The fruits were in all shapes and sizes, looking so tempting in different vibrant colours. With so much interest in fruits, knowing and trying all the tropical fruits that are currently in season is on top of their agenda.
During the week, I have showed them many types of local fruits to them at the wet markets, night market and also at the hypermarket. Of course, the timing was so great that it is the Durian season now. We were in SS 2 durian-buffet stall (eat-all-you-can promotion) to understand why are Malaysians intrigued by this ‘King of Fruits’. The stalls are set up next to the road side, with some tables and chairs placed under the tent. There were baskets of durians and many were sitting their savouring the fruit. However we did not stay there long as the smell lingering in the air intimidates all of us. Evidently, like me, my parents are not fans of the fruit. However, applause to my mother as she did try a small bite of the durian. Well, she had many many mints after that.
My parents tried pineapple (I showed them the way to skin the fruits too), mangosteen, banana, coconut, jackfruit, nangka – just to mention a few. They were glad of the opportunity being exposed to so many other types of fruits. They took many pictures and I would just like to show you some of their masterpiece.

I heart fruits so much! Could swap them for a lunch / dinner meal anytime, anyday!
