Just who is Alexa Chung?
By: yetmee
Well, let me see, she is only the current “It ” girl of the obsessive British press after Sienna Miller. She turned down offer to read English at King’s College London at 16 to be a model. Currently a TV presenter, columnist, girlfriend of Alex Turner from the band Artic Monkeys. She is half Chinese , half English, so the Chung part is not some exotic English name but a true blue Chinese one instead. www.stylefinder.com describes her style as casual chic with distinct continental flavour….Her distinctive and quirky style is not unknown to have been associated with words like chic, grunge, rocker babe- ish, messy, laidback and messy hair completes the look .
Now in Malaysia (pardon my ignorance if any), we don’t really have “It ” girls, although we have “celebrities”, mini or maxi ones. I am thinking if we only know the “rules” for and how one gets to be an “It” girl, we would probably have very many in Malaysia ourselves. As with most “It” girls , they don’t do too much, “people” just love her “style”.
So essentially , party going, celebrity boyfriends and TV personality aside, it is her fashion style and fashion statement that makes people go ga-ga as I understand it. Every piece of item and style of clothing is imitated. I mean look at Sienna Miller , I have seen a couple , admittedly just a couple of interviews with her and I must ask, seriously, what is the fuss about. My point is this, when we say we like someone else’s style, what does it really say about us? Okay, I haven’t heard Alexa speak or watched her being interviewed but I reckon , the girl’s got a thing or two going for her. She at least has quite a few accomplishments under her belt if the wikipedia is anything to go by; and I must say I kind of dig her grunge chic look myself. But back to the issue of “IT” person idolism….
Do we like them because they are something we can relate to ,in the case of Alexa Chung’s style, I mean, grunge chic seems easy and effortless enough and that is probably how we see ourselves. We wish to be chic and be seen as chic but really it takes too much effort and we are not sure we can pull it off. So we go halfway and think , yeah it’s good enough when in reality, we may very well just gave up on ourselves.
We tell ourselves we don’t care, but deep inside we really do. Rebel chic is kind of like rebel kids- afraid of not being loved for who they are , they take on a devil may care persona and tell the world an entirely different story. I mean, when you don’t try too hard, you can’t fail right.
So just who is Alexa Chung ……maybe it’s you and I and everyone else looking for something in in someone else ,when we should really just look within ourselves…I still dig her leather jacket…

I’m actually very fond of Alexa’s style.
Personally, I think it’s quite impossible to have unique style at all. We’re constantly influenced by media, by different cultures, by people around us, that nothing is really original. I think she’s just making the best of it, and the reason why she’s getting so much praise in the fashion department is because she KNOWS what looks good on HER. That, I think is what makes people in general, fashionable.

Hi, Kayla, welcome to the World Debate of Style vs Fashionable… in the end I guess we should just make the most of our own assets and dress to fit ourselves and let our clothes speak of who we really are.
I like Alexa Chung too and I agree with your observation. And I don’t think it is shallow to think clothes are important…because trust me when you look good, you will feel good and your self esteem shoots up and yes, you can be a happier person and the universe moves seemingly for you alone…
