MODA Unity 2009-Review
By: yetmee
MODA Unity was on 30th April 2009 , we took the time to edit all the photos we took, but we felt if we did not it just would not be fair to you or the designers. MODA current president , Gillian Hung , apparently single handedly organized this annual grand event , according to Edwin Sumun, who was rib tickling funny with his sarky humour as emcee told the crowd. As the event started like two hours late, his voice over remarks was my entertainment.
Since a picture speaks a thousand words, there are like a few thousand here, use your own ears. But suffice to say, that it was great effort to showcase this for Malaysian designers and Malaysian brands. Some have matured and are a delight to watch. Others are still doing the same old and some just “adapted” from haute couture like the Balenciaga structured tulip skirts. Which leaves one to wonder what are we to marvel at, that they succeeded in copying a difficult construction or that they borrowed too liberally. But nonetheless overall, it was impressive, they (the designers) put their best foot forward.
My personal favorites, I have recently , started to notice Alvin Tay’s evening creations, they are very lovely to put it mildly. He experiments with billowy and also form fitting silhouette and manages both to be flattering. It also helps to have a muse like Amber Chia, whose poise shows her international exposure. Then, there is Key Ng, from when he first started with some very creative if a tad outlandish sci fi Star Trek in Stepford wives country, he has evolved and made them wearable while retaining a lot of his identity, like the contrast piping and the bubble skirts.
My next favorite would be Melinda Looi, she’s still got it. Mixing leather or leather look alike with buoyant chiffon, makes once feel quite nymphlike if one were to dorn such an outfit I am sure. Jendela Batik’s elongated kimono sleeves top and foldable skirts also were memorable. Then there is Alexandria Yeo’s collection which is creative and yet wearable. Of course, Amanda Brown’s newsprint dresses that had everyone guessing if they were really made of newsprint really stood out. She even cut little swathes of fabric and patched them on the dresses. I could not stop thinking about them. Outrageous!
As for the menswear, my favorite have to be Karl Ng’s vests and William Liew’s drop crotch pants. The attention to detail cuts across to the practical level, yes they are wearable. It would take a certain attitude, nonetheless, but it would make any man’s wardrobe so much more interesting to wear something like what they showed, I am a so excited for the men, metrosexual, straight or gay…
