The French Film Festival is back at GSC and this time around, they have a few awesome movies which has won many awards. Go catch the movies at GSC’s international screens as they are French and we all need a dose of French Language in our system, its a lovely language. Don’t worry, they all come with subtitles, so you can understand them. Movies showing this year are:
- Le Crime est notre affaire (Crime is our business)
- Les Liens du sang (Rivals)
- Ensemble c’est tout (Hunting and Gathering
- Séraphine
- Saint Cyr
- Les 400 Coups (400 blows)

I’ve had the privilege to watch Séraphine at GSC Mid Valley last week.
It was a biography movie of a French maid turned into an artist which was set in 1912 during the war. Séraphine de Senlis was a 40+ year old maid who loved nature and she worked as a cleaning lady in houses at Senlis. People always talked about how she has a quirky personality and always walks by herself and climbs up trees to enjoy the wind. She has this innocence in her and she believes that the angels talks to her at night and guides her as she draws.
She paints very abstract like flower motives using very unconventional ways of painting using blood, oil, wax, some colouring and uses her hands to paint on wood as she did not have enough money to buy real paint, brushes and canvas. Her painting was then discovered by Wilhelm Uhde, a German collector who then decides to sell her art. Whatever happened next, you’ll have to watch for yourself:)
It is an amazing movie with really not much action and more conversation but it tugs your heartstrings as you watch the rise of Séraphine until she passes away.

Besides the movies, the French Film and Art Festival also has other events like art exhibitions and music throughout KL and Penang.
