So, when I first got this mascara to try out, I just ran down 14 floors of staircase and walked 10 minutes to my car park, at 630pm after work. Lets just say, it was a long day and I was stuck in a bumper to bumper jam at Jalan Sultan Ismail after that. Instead of doing what I would normally do during a jam, I decided to try something new to make myself feel better.

So I dug down deep into my handbag and pulled out this new mascara by Maybelline called the Maybelline Volum’ Express Hypercurl Cat Eyes Mascara. New shiny thing – always makes me happy!!

I had no clue what this mascara was all about, I’ve only tried their first generation of Volum’Express mascara earlier and thought it would be somewhat alike. How wrong was I. The exterior for one, is chic. It is black in colour with a feline-black-stripes on a pink cover. This mascara comes in a spiky comb-like applicator which was something new for myself. I’ve tried applicators that vibrates and that which are brush-like, but I’ve never tried a comb-like applicator. I was truly intrigue to try it at once.

So in the middle of a jam, I whipped out the applicator, looked into the rear-view mirror and applied the mascara. Granted I was multitasking and it was my first time using it, the mascara was quite easy to apply. I had to learn how to apply properly first. After applying, this is what it looked like:

What I find great about this mascara is that, even after ONE application, it had the volume; length and curl which made my eye lashes really stand out, as compared to the eye without the mascara. The lashes were opened and spread evenly by the comb applicator. It also gave volume after the second application.

Of course, I did not achieve the feline look of the model in the poster of this Cat Eyes Mascara (some day I will achieve this look!):

I went to the gym after that, for a few rounds on the treadmill and a body jam class. Of course, having much sweat glands, I sweated a lot. Checked my eye after gym, it was still there. Then, I took a shower without removing my mascara to check and see if it will still stay, true to what it says, it is waterproof, sweat proof and lasts long (in my case it lasted till 12am until I removed it).

Unsatisfied with the results, I tried it again. This time, I was in the comforts of my own home. I got used to the brush this time and as I expected, the result was much better. The lashes were longer, it was spread even more evenly and it curled much more.

The ad claims that it will curl up to 75 degrees and will be 5 times the volume without clumps. How right they were this time. Check out my close up of the eye:

Final verdict:

• Volume - 4/5
• Curl – 5/5
• Length – 4/5
• Applicator - is new to me and I am quite impressed.
• Lasting – Only tried for a night on the first day, it lasted for 6 hours. So I can’t comment much on this.
• Removing – Being a waterproof make up, I thought it would be hard to remove, but I removed it using the “place soaked cotton pad for 20 seconds” rule and it came off quite easily.
