Question: Vintage aspirations

A vintage look may be rather simple to achieve if one were to throw together some thrifted items scoured from secondhand stores but if one were to consider putting together a look that’s firsthand (and not been previously worn by someone else), the question becomes a rather challenging one.

What items are considered ‘vintage’ looking? Which era do you reference? If you opt for something top-to-toe, would that be too over-the-top?

The first thing to consider is what event or occasion you are dressing up for. A party with a vintage theme is a good time to try a new look but do plan several days ahead so that you have all the right accessories and base clothing (i.e. the building piece you start with). If you want to try vintage on a regular day, for example, for work, a vintage blouse in a pretty print paired with a pair of sleek pants will do the trick.

An easy era to reference is the 50s. Think The Stepford Wives or Grease and start with the basic strapless dress:

Even if you don’t have a strapless dress, one cut straight across the front with shoestring straps will do too. You can even cheat a flared skirt by layering another full skirt underneath (just make sure it’s shorter than your dress).

Accessorise with simple stud earrings like these gold ones.

You can also opt to tie a cardigan around your shoulders loosely.

A headband is a nice 50s touch to your outfit. If you’re not a fan of them, a high ponytail will do just as well!

Ballet flats are simple and round up your look nicely. If you want some height, opt for round toe pumps (try not to for platform pumps though as they’re too hard-edged for a look that’s soft and pretty).

A cute clutch purse you can hold or loop on one shoulder is dainty enough. For an even more authentic look, a floral one does it every time.
