A touch of Greece

The Grecian dress is a classic fashion staple in any wardrobe. Suitable for formal events in the form of a gown, a toga-style top for dinners, or even a draped mini dress for a party,  the draping and ruching of this elegant silhouette suits many shapes and is able to make the most of what you have got up on top as it draws attention to the upper half of the body.

Fear not if you are top heavy; simply select a one-shouldered gown or dress that emphasizes the shoulders and the soft ruching of the fabric will gently glide over in a forgiving manner over the  chest. It’s that simple! Folds that fall over the waist and hips before ending in a long skirt do wonders for concealing a not-so toned stomach and wider hips. If you feel a long skirt will make you look shorter, simply and a pair of incredibly high heels (none of those chunky ones in a stark colour to your dress, please) and you will be lifted and looking like a goddess.

Here are some celebrity styles to get you inspired to don this figure-friendly trend:

Eva Longoria stuns in turquoise. A jewelled neckline draws attention to the face, so there’s no need for huge earrings or a necklace and the belt adds shape to the silhouette.

Not all Grecian styles are one-shouldered. Here, Anne Hathaway takes a classic column style and wears it simply with a diamond bracelet.

A bright colour like coral is great on all skin tones, like Beyonce demonstrates here. Your gown need not necessarily be in a white or nude. Colours add another dimension to this style, making it fresh.

Jada Pinkett-Smith dons a rust coloured gown cinched with a belt. This style enhances the collarbone and the shoulders.

Jennifer Morrisson chooses a one shouldered number with lace trim at the lower half of the skirt and pairs it with chandelier earrings and upswept hair, making this look soft and romantic.

Kelly Osbourne

This particular trend looks great on fuller figures like Kelly Osbourne here. The block colours on the gown make her look slimmer and her hair lends to an edgy chic to the typically feminine look.

molly-sims

Molly Sims pairs rose pink satin with silver and diamond accessories. The draping on either sides of the skirt are great for concealing the thigh area while emphasisng an overall shape.

Olivia Wilde wears a style that has been copied by many high street shops. The halter neck will flatter a larger chest and draw attention to the shoulders. This is best worn with hair pulled back.

Sienna Miller (left) and Emily Blunt opt for glorious colours with Sienna choosing a split in her skirt to highlight her legs, and Emily enhancing a smaller chest with folds at the bust.

Trust Taylor Momsen to give us a darker version of this sweetly sophisticated trend using red lips and bed hair to offset the pleated ballgown.

Here is a short version of this trend as worn by Freida Pinto: drapes that meet at the waist (the smallest point of the upper body, thus making you look like you have an hourglass shape) and flow out to one side.

Which celebrity do you think looks the best in a Grecian gown?
