Colour Blocking -Spring Summer 2009
By: yetmee
Just came back from lunch at Midvalley/Gardens, and I must say I am almost “blinded” by the array of colours at the stores. MNG , Zara and Jaspal , Guess, Karen Millen and Ted Baker to name a few brands that have brought out their Spring Summer 09 range and they are mighty pretty! It makes one really cheerful and happy just to walk past the shop windows…
A prominent colour seems to be lime green and tomato reds. Of course black is still a staple . Interestingly enough, a lot of these shops also brought out leather jackets for this colourful season.
Colour blocking is very strong this season. When they say colour blocking , my interpretation is that the want that you should wear at least two strong colours together. No more paring down a red blouse with a neutral shade like black, navy blue or beige. But instead it could be shiny silver, electric blue or bright yellow instead.
The first time I ever saw colour blocking was way back when a friend was hawking off a pantsuit by Moschino. It was a canary yellow shell top with hot red capri pants. I mean to me, then , it was an audacious blend of colours. Both screamed attention, LOOK AT ME! But these days, I am getting used to the idea of colour blocking. Admittedly my most daring colour blocking has been a red pencil skirt with a mauve turtle neck top. And I thought that was handsomely different without being too loud. But boy , in reality my efforts seem pale in comparison to what is in this season.
How are the designers doing the colours, check out bright hunter green with red hot skirt, aquamarine with canary yellow, electric blue with royal purple and so much more. It is like a free for all, just throw the brightest colour that you have in the wardrobe, update with the latest sky high stilettos, a snakeskin bag and you are IT, girl!
But as always when working with colour, mix from the same family of tones ie pastels with pastels and brights with brights!
