Shops that ship internationally - Mod Cloth
By: karenmarie
It is no doubt that online shopping overseas are much more developed. In Malaysia, the online shopping industry grew so fast and boomed in 2008. We ourselves saw it growing. Our directory had merely 10+ shops when we first started and soon, it became a massive list of shops. It is an impressive step, but we always say that we’re behind time when it comes to online shopping and that we can never get awesome clothes from overseas because they don’t ship overseas.
WRONG!
If you look carefully, there are many shops that originate from US or elsewhere that do ship internationally. We just have to look carefully and of course be prepared to bear the cost of postage which are a little bit more than what we usually pay Pos Laju/Pos Malaysia.
While browsing my usual dose of online shops, I found so many shops that do ship internationally. Emmagem will try to compile all these shops that ship internationally for your convienience. This is so that you have more choices when it comes to online shopping either here on MOFSD or overseas. We all just love choices right.
Pros and cons of shopping online internationally.
Pros would be that we now have more choices as the online world has loads of e-shops and we are going to be spoilt with choices. You can now get that indie designer’s jewelry that you’ve been eyeing or that super hot hoodie from designer in UK.
Cons: Expensive! Usually the cost of postage internationally go from USD$10 and above. If you are buying heavy items, its even more. What’s worst is that once it reaches Malaysia, there might be import duties and sales tax imposed on your item. It might take a while in the customs before it can be released to the buyer.
I’ve actually heard horror stories about the time it took before the parcel was released. I guess all the bureaucracy takes time. The cost of the import duty and sales tax are usually depending on the item itself. The customs agents will inspect the item first. We will have to look into this matter and tell you more information. According to the Royal Malaysian Customs:
DUTIES All duties/custom taxes imposed on imported goods will need to be paid in advance before the goods can be released. The same applies for exported goods. All exported goods will need to settle the export duties prior to clearance.
Duties/Taxes levied on any goods imported into the county include:
• Import duty
• Sales tax
• Excise duty
Import Duty Duty import rates vary according to the type of imported goods. The rates imposed on each good imported is describe in column 4 and 5 of the First Schedule under the Customs Duties Order 1996. It is possible that imported goods are exempted from the import duty. However, it is not exempted from the sales tax.
At the end of the day, if you want it bad enough, I guess all that hassle of bringing it here would be erased once you lay your hands on that awesome dress you’ve been eyeing on
Nevertheless, check out the first (with a lot more coming) online shop that emmagem will feature. This shop is call Mod Cloth.
Mod Cloth is an online shopping site created by Susan Gregg-Koger because she was a thrifter. She had so many clothes and soon decided to sell them online on her site. On her first day of sales, she sold her first item and the rest as they say is history. Mod Cloth now is an internationally known shop which sells retro indie clothing and also not forgetting vintage clothing. Their style is more towards vintage chic with lods of mix and matching. From Fuchsia Peacock Feather Tights to Vintage Rainbow Sprinkle Purse, I think you can find loads of quirky retro items from this shop.
