Fitting/Dressing Room Self Portraits

Do you sometimes get caught taking a picture of yourself in front of the mirror by your friends in the dressing room in Forever 21? lols. I myself am guilty of it. Then I googled and went blog surfing and found out that I’m not the only one guilty of doing this. I found myself a whole load of other people who just love self portraits in the fitting room. I’m so not alone. There was even a whole flickr group dedicated to dressing room photos.

Fitting rooms are usually designed with really nice lighting and HUGE mirrors to make you look good when trying on clothes. For the obvious reasons so that you buy their clothes. And when a self-camwhore-portait photo is taken there, it really brings out you in the picture. Doesn’t it?

Well, not all fitting rooms are of best lighting. Some of it are quite crappy that you don’t even feel like trying on clothes. Not forgetting those that are so dirty it has dust balls on the corners. Eiuw. Quite gross, especially knowing how some people just simply throw clothes on the floor.

In Malaysia, I don’t see many really nice fitting rooms. There’s one fitting room in Bangsar (I forgot which one) which is really nice. They really thought long and hard about how to pamper their customers. Most departmental stores fitting rooms are quite dodgy as well. Some of them are really small and you’d have to squeeze through the door. Some door knobs are spoilt. Some stores don’t even allow you to try clothes (Read: Sungei Wang/BTS,lols)!!

Big stores in the USA like JC Penney and Macy’s have already done their research on how to make their dressing rooms more appealing to their customers. According to this article, customers wanted a bigger room to accomodate their friends, more hooks and a bigger mirror.

After being a shopaholic for so many years and going into many many fitting rooms, I’ve developed a good sense of what’s nice and what’s not nice in a fitting room. I really like those which are very comfortable and pleasing to the eye. I’ve come up with my very own version of a perfect fitting room. Share with me your opinions on fitting rooms!

What makes a good fitting room?

  1. Mirrors, loads of em

I love fitting room with like a 3-way mirror. This way, I can look at almost 360 degree of myself :)

  2. Good lighting

If the fitting room is dark, you can’t really see the dress properly. It also sucks when the room has very “yellow” lighting, because you can’t really see the true colour of the dress. Then when you wear it outside the store after you’ve bought it, it looks way different.

  3. Bigger room

I always ask my friends for opinions on my outfit, and sometimes I call them in the fitting room, lols. A bigger room would be good:)

  4. Carpeted floors

It just feels much better when you have to go barefoot. I don’t know about you, but i’d like to parade around the fitting room just to see how the dress/skirt flows.

  5. Hooks

Hooks are important. Firstly because we want to hang our clothes and not get them dirty. But more importantly, a good hook will not spoil the piece of clothing when it is hung. I really don’t like those railing kinds (like ones you hang your towel)

  6. A chair/stool

Sometimes, when I try on clothes, I’d like to see myself sitting down with the clothing item. But not many fitting room has stools. The only one I know of is Dorothy Perkins.

  7. Air con

Some fitting rooms with no air ventilation, omg, cannot breathe.

Do you agree or disagree? Owh, also tell us which is your favourite dressing room in shopping malls in Malaysia?
