The heat of Africa

By: Cherrypop

Breezy resort wear destination Island Shop takes inspiration from the continent of Africa this summer, bringing the expedition experience through their clothing as they embark on a journey from the mountain of Kenya to the grasslands of the Serengeti.

As can be seen from the label’s campaign images, the pictures tell the story of a couple on a journey to exotic countries, firstly beginning with Ndebele of South Africa. As one of the most colourful tribes in Africa, the Ndebele people are known for their decorative tribal house paintings as well as colourful beadwork. This is apparent in the couple’s clothing which bear the signature tribal, geometric patterns in red and white, while for women, there is a patterned linen tunic with red and gold beading at the neckline. Perfect for a warm day when paired with neutral coloured cropped pants or shorts and accented with a pair of brass earrings, the look exuded is casual and stylish for the relaxed woman.

Another look in the Island Shop collection is inspired by the African mud-dying technique called Bakuba. Using all-natural materials, fabrics are in earthy tones of chocolate, clay, terracotta, khaki and cream with clean, graphic shapes as the focus. The result is a chic and carefree look for anyone wanting comfort and style. Together with this, a patterned scarf in contrasting colours and wooden chunky bangles finish off the outfit. A charcoal-hued dress worn by the model in the campaign is perfectly set off with knee-high gladiator sandals. Tough, yet kept feminine with trailing layers of necklaces and chunky bangles staked on both arms, opt for white strappy heels for a difference as this adds more feminine touches to your look and this is great for a dinner date or party.

With the desert in mind and the Serengeti sun setting, suits and dresses are safari-inspired and utilitarian by nature. Soft cotton maxi dresses and khaki tones in the form of subtle floral print shirts and structured trousers balance out the look and are ideal for keeping cool in our warm and humid weather.

Island Shop has also embarked on a charity initiative with World Vision, a Christian relief, development and advocacy organization dedicated to working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice. In line with Island Shop’s High Summer/ Cruise 08’ collection – The African Expedition, the brand will support World Vision’s Thusalushaka Area Development Programme (ADP) in South Africa to eradicate poverty. The store is selling limited-edition tote bags, with all proceeds being donated to support the cause. These tote bags are double-layered, reversible linen bags with a stylish zebra print, and are available in six colours, which are white/pink, light blue/navy, red/khaki green, salmon pink/lime green, rust/olive and grey/chocolate brown. Available at all Island Shop counters and boutiques from November 2008 onwards, each bag will retail for RM25, or RM15 with any Island Shop purchase.
