Question: Fabrics

By: karenmarie

Hello everyone =). I’ll be so delighted if someone can tell me where I can get Japanese linen/cotton fabrics. I am referring to those oh-so-adorable fabrics (what some may regard as “kawaii”).
Thanks in advance =)

Hey Lynnie!

I’m not sure as to where to get Japanese cotton fabrics here in Malaysia, besides Nagoya, Kamdar and other stores like that, but I did find an article written by Shambie of Shambijoux, a crafter and bag designer, about where to get cutesey fabrics. She makes pretty cute clutches and such with really pretty fabric prints. She usually buys them from overseas. She linked a few online shops from the USA and some of her commenters did comment on where to get them in Malaysia. Have a read at it here.

Fabric from Ikea

If you want to, you can try finding them at fabric stores in KL/Malaysia:

Nagoya Textile & Fashioned Sdn. Bhd.
Lot No. F4-43 1st Floor
Carrefour Shopping Centre
Subang Jaya, Selangor
47500 Selangor

(I only know of the one in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Carrefour Subang and Jusco/Alpha Angle Wangsa Maju) *There are more available elsewhere I think :)

Kamdar Sdn Bhd
113 Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman,
50100 Kuala Lumpur

(Also available in Mid Valley) *There are more available elsewhere I think :)

IKEA Malaysia
No.2, Jalan PJU 7/2, Mutlara Damansara,
47800 Petaling Jaya, Selangor Darul Ehsan,
Malaysia

  1. Karenmarie,
You are so awesome! Thanks for the list =). I really really appreciate it. I had no idea that Ikea sold fabrics!
I have thought about places like eBay and websites that Shambie buys from, but they challenge the depths of my pockets. And truth to be told, they aren’t very deep =(.
So, the list really helps! Thanks again =)

  2. Ikea have lots of fabrics… with bold prints and vibrant colors! Love them but I’ve never been to Ikea, sadly. I live in East Coast, went to KL once a month on a short trip. Doesnt have time to go shopping at Ikea :p

So, i prefer buying them online.

Btw, i saw linens with interesting print… at some shops in Masjid Jamek and Jalan TAR. Priced at RM40-RM60 per meter and minimum cut for each print is 2meters!!! *eek*

  3. Wahh, that’s mahal!
But I guess, if shipped from US also almost the same price, no?

  4. usually they charged $12 for shipping (up to 6-7yards),
and the max price for 1yard of lightweight cotton is $9. But Japanese fabrics might be higher!

    so, yup.. if u do the math;
    ($9 x 6y + $12) / 6y = USD11

    *conversion rate RM3.50 = RM38.50/yard!

cheaper rite? Plus you can buy half yard for each print ;) perfect for small projects~

you can refer to True Up for sale alert! *yeay*

  5. hye lynnie,

i happen to drop by Euro Moda at SACC Mall in shah alam yesterday and they do sell cute Japanese cotton fabrics.. but they’re not that cheap, about rm98 per piece if i’m not mistaken..hehe..
but some are really beautiful and kinda retro-ish..
    do check em out :)

  6. Thanks Norul for sharing the information :)

  7. $98 is wayyyy wayyyy over my budget. But I’ll definitely be going there to salivate all over the fabric =P.
    Thanks, Norol! You’re a gem =)
Shambie, will be sharing your fabric finds from KL on your blog? I’m rather excited to know what you got!

  8. Hope you will manage to find your fabrics:)

Share with us what you’re making! hehe

  9. Karenmarie,
Yes, indeed, I will! But fabric shopping and sewing will take place only in December. I live overseas at the moment, and I only return to good ole’ KL at the end of the year. Maybe I’ll get lucky and Jalan TAR will be having a fabric-sales frenzy! =D
Thanks so much again for the tips!
    Have a lurvely day

  17. Recently, my friend told me that one of her colleague just came back from Jakarta and she bought Japanese Cotton at a very low price. She bought tonnes of that material and sell back here at RM40 for 4 metres, YES, I’m not wrongly typing. Its true. Can someone tell me, what is the quality like? I haven’t got the chance to see it yet.
