Fall prep done the Hilfiger way
By: CherrypopThere’s no other quite like Tommy Hilfiger when he churns out his collection to hit the runways. Never afraid to play with the signature Americana look that fans of his label have grown to love, the designer was inspired by democratic New York this fall 2008 and this is apparent in the three different looks he masterminded – Hudson Getaway, American Vision and Photorealism.

In Hudson Getaway, the romance of the city that never sleeps is captured with elegance in the form of fluid lines. Fabrics like cashmere, wool and cotton come to life in the form of a neutral palette of beige, brown and grey. What is admirable about Tommy Hilfiger is that his lines never fail to be wearable and simple enough to be carried off by the fashionable woman at the workplace or on casual weekends. Items like the sheer pussy-bow blouse in a discreet plaid pattern matched with a red and black tiny check skirt is lightweight enough without sacrificing style and the mismatched pattern in this ensemble works well without clashing.

For the style savvy kids who pride themselves in impressing looks-wise as much as grades-wise, Tommy’s American vision is perfect to get one in the mood for college. Borrowing from the 50s college campuses where preppy styles like check and stripes appear on blazers, sweaters and cardigans, models carried off plenty of reds, whites, blacks and details like crests and embroidery with an air of nonchalance. Tartans, plaids and checks turned traditional fabrics including tweed and wool into a younger version of clean cut old-school style. How can one possibly resist the combination of plaid pants paired with a crisp white shirt for the office or dressed down with a rocker-style logo tee on the weekend? The collared cardigan look can also easily be achieved by layering a lightweight pullover over a navy blue or red shirt, and matched with a grey wool skirt and tights, you instantly channel classic American prep.
A more downtown version of New York in the 60s was successfully brought to life when loud colours met with polished chrome finishes. A key silhouette befitting of the red carpet was a silky maroon gown with a bow at the neck. There was even a mannish tuxedo with the only hint of femininity being the hint of bow at the neck of a white collared blouse. Us normal girls can easily wear the dress for a formal occasion, and for the more daring, the suit minus a shirt underneath!
Evidently, Americana prep can also grow up and be mixed and matched with more casual or formal pieces to create a look that’s individual and yet still have a hint of the Tommy Hilfiger essence to it.
