Hair Bands - Older Than Ala Blair Waldorf
By: yetmee
Hi there!
This look is so cute. But isn’t a hard look to pull if you’re (read: I’m) a career woman past my 20s?
I would appreciate any suggestions on how to wear these headbands and look cute — and not cuckoo — for the young-at-heart 30-somethings?
Thanks!
Suzie
The other day we had a reader who wanted to know how one can wear headband without looking like a teenager or college kid and well I understand that. If you are over thirty and feel like wearing hair bands, how do you give it a sophisticated look? I personally struggle with it cause I only wear mine when at the gym or in the shower or just moping around, so your question, Suzie got me thinking and since it is a mind set thing ,as I too think hair bands look cutesey. So I did a little soul-searching and some research.
So ,it would have to be a case of mind over matter , I reckon. I would start by envisioning every imaginable outfit that might look good to wear a hair band with. Then, I would intentionally imagine what type of hair band best look good on me. There are many types of hairbands, but suffice to say , use only the most basic, it could be lacey, velvet or even plastic bands (ala Chanel). It can be soft and elasticated like a thick hairband (3 inches wide) like Pat Macgrath’s (international make up artist’s signature headgear), as pictured above.
But I am inclined to stay away from bows and and if one must stripe or have it with bold prints, make sure it is a statement piece, worn like a scarf, with pride! Or try it with bold colours to match the outfit’s colour.
Then the hair, being deliberate with the hair band, means dressing up the hair. Try slicked back hair (as seen at Chanel spring summer 2009), pony tailed or plaits (like Pat does). Read also “How Celebrities Band It Together“!
Next, make sure to wear make up so that it feels and looks like part of an outfit for work or play! Last but not least accessorise and heavily, if you will! Remember the whole point would be to be functionally chic; functional cause it keeps hair away from face and chic cause you wore it as such!
What type of outfit can one wear it with? Well anything from a suit right down to a dress !See how Chanel and Dries Van Noten do the hair band thing!
