Rediscover past treasures
By: yetmee

On 19th September, emmagem went to the launch of a new range of furniture and home accessories entitled Rediscover Past Treasures by Tridi Sdn. Bhd. The launch showcased their inaugural products entitled Cloud 9 and Spring. This collection shows a series of art boxes , chairs, rugs , mirrors and trays with drawings of clouds from the Cirebon batik tradition. And true to their rejoicing of the tapestry and diversity of Asian cultures , you will find that the batik prints on the lampshades are printed in Malaysia but the surface for the tray and chairs are made from the traditional Vietnamese craftsmanship of silkscreen lacquer. Being designers as well as architects, there were cute pieces of lampshades attached to a mirror for easier illumination for instance and also lampshades fixed on a wooden stick for a more natural look , one presumes. The end results are beautifully designed and exquisite pieces but yet functional at the same time.
The event was held in the hangar like warehouse cum office of Tridi Sdn. Bhd. and there was even a big picture of an airplane in the middle of the wall. Perhaps the owner hopes to house a real plane in there one day and uses the picture for visualization exercises, I jest… The whole atmosphere was one of celebration but with a difference , it was artistic , pretty and yet strangely nolstalgic, maybe it was because of the rather rudimentary setting of the exhibition.

The three design directors , Chong Kok Heung, Caecar Chong (pictured above) and Tan Wei Ming are supported by the pillars of strength of Tridi ,renowned in their own spheres; Khoo Boo Siew (architect), David Lok (photographer), Jennifer Dyson (founder of Living Space) and Joseph Foo (creative director); have a vision to create a range that is thought provoking and encourages discussion among other artists, aspiring designers and architects to the beauty of a shared heritage and to rediscover the treasures of our past … and provoked they will albeit subtly.
All their pieces can be viewed and some pieces are for sale at their showroom at Kampung Baru Subang office and at Living Space in Chieng Mai. For orders and enquiries email info@tridilab.com or call Wei Ming at 03-7846 9676.
