TheOtherMalaysia and Dr Farish A Noor present a simple exhibition of posters and images that looks at how notions of race, ethnicity and “native identity” - from culture to sexuality - were invented from the colonial era to the present. Inventing Malaysia will include lectures, exhibition of archival materials and film screenings of movies about Malaya/Malaysia shot from 40s, 50s & 60s, looking at how Malaya was perceived from the Occidental worldview (Lord Jim, starring Peter O Toole; The Pirate of Malaya, starring Steve Reeves; Outpost in Malaya, starring Claudette Colbert; Malaya, starring Spencer Tracy).

Grant For Grabs Update
Recipients of The Annexe Gallery’s Grants For Grab arts fund program have been sending us updates of their respective projects and we’d like to share them with you.
On 23 August, Simon Soon and a gaggle of artists and artsy types will be bussing to Kuala Kubu Baru for a “Picnic At Sungai Chilling Falls”. The picnic is Simon’s winning proposal to create an event that would foster a post-disciplinary dialogue among the artists in a natural environment.
Meanwhile, grant recipient Rumah Air Panas will present their proposed event “Contemporary Art In School Project” at SM Stella Maris from 25 August to 6 September. Please visit their blog at http://caisproject.blogspot.com or call +6016 684 3063 for more details.
On 31 August from 9am onwards, at 501 Block C, Taman Prima Selayang, Selayang, Batu Caves, grant recipient Elaine Pedley, together with Sister Bertha, will be presenting two skits and two dances, which are showcase presentations of her project “Dance & Performance Workshops For Children Of The Selayang Community”. Hi, pix were from last evening at 5pm… turn out was not bad fro a public holiday, check out the roller coasters with tiny furniture from Fabian Tan and Lisa Foo and also some clay oinks or was it some other material I forget which were so cute.. atmosphere was cool as usual , a guy on bicycle cylced around and lelong his kueh, plenty of excitement and activities around… I always love the creative air that surrounds this event… Downstairs there was a one man/woman anklung orchestra palying soem mean melody.. cool !! still time today, go and check out soem cool artworks …
Yeah, hopefully… Penang has a lot of talent as well, and it’ll be great to have an event to showcase it. So far, the Upper Penang Road (Little Penang) Street Market is the only one available, and it’s doing very well. I won’t mind getting involved with the organizing of such events, especially online bazaars. SO ALL YOU ORGANIZERS, HEAR MY CRY!!!
