Waisted Days and Waisted Nights

By: Melody Song

Trends are a tricky thing. One minute they make you look absolutely fabulous, dahling; other times they make you feel ridiculously, well, ridiculous.

But there’s one trend that has lived on for almost two decades now, fading in and out of the background: the high-waisted trend.

I was poking around my wardrobe last night for something funky to wear to class, when I chances upon a genuine 80′s high-waisted denim pencil skirt that belonged to my aunt. It was perfect: different, the cut was perfect, and it was seriously vintage . And I thought, ‘Heck, why not?’

Though I personally reckon the high-waisted pant is a harder look to pull off, the high-waisted skirt works better, especially in Malaysia’s sweltering heat. The emphasis on the waist also gives an illusion of longer, more lithe legs. Especially when teamed with high heels or wedges.

Another virtue of the high-waisted skirt I would like to extol is its bum-shrinking properties. For someone of average height and weight, I admit to having an exceptionally curvy derri¨¨re? athe high-waisted skirt, especially in darker colours and stiffer fabrics such as denim helps conceal this while complementing my smaller-by-comparison waist.

They also spare us the embarrassment (and other people, the horror) or accidentally catching a view of a crack where the sun normally doesn’t shine if you happen to squat down or bend over to pick something up. Here’s to no more horrid crack-sightings!

The high-waisted skirt trend can very easily be taken from day to night. A good basic to have would be a high-waisted denim pencil skirt in a darker wash.

For a fun day time look that screams effortlessly casual chic, pair your skirt with cute ballet or canvas flats and a loud, statement t-shirt tucked in. Complete the look with a long pendant necklace, or a few chunky bangles. You could even add a wide patent-leather belt in lieu of chunky accessories,

To take your look to the office, pair it with a crisp white tailored shirt (tucked in, of course) and heeled loafers. Opt for more subtle jewelry, such as a pair of freshwater pearls, or layer a few delicate silver and gold necklaces for a look that is feminine yet fashionable.

Get the most of your high-waisted baby by bringing it out for a night on the town. Don a slinky jersey top, or layer two singlets and pair it with chandelier earrings and sexy strappy wedge heels. A quirky clutch will complete your look.

With a cut as daring and retro as this, one has to throw all reservations out the window?astand out, and stand proud. With a little shimmy and wiggle of your fabulously accentuated waist, you may find more heads turning your way?aif not out of admiration, then out of envy because you look amazing, or have the guts to pull off this retro-look!
