Your Song

By: Denise Chin

As a result of watching too many musicals and movies, I have a song running through my head most of the time. It’s like a soundtrack to my every action. When I sit in the backseat of a car and look out the window, I hear a fast-paced song in the background, akin to a scene from a movie when the protagonist moves to a new city. When I drive to some place early in the morning, an upbeat happy song fills the air. When I get things done and feel I have accomplished something, an inspirational tune starts to play. When I shed a few tears caused by the unfairness of the world, a melancholic hymn rings. Am I going crazy with music in my head all the time? I hope so!

To be able to have a portable music box that moves as you move, sleeps when you sleep and plays the exact tune to match your emotions is marvelous, but well, doesn’t come as naturally to some. So an alternative would be to have a personal theme song. Or better still, a soundtrack to your life! *Cue heavenly choir*

Not too alien to people these days, it was probably Ally McBeal’s eccentric and wacky shrink that opened her and us too, to the world of personal theme songs. The goal of having a theme song, according to this unorthodox therapist, was to boost one’s ego. Ally’s first pick to her theme song was coincidentally also the theme song to the series, Searchin’ My Soul by Vonda Shepard. The shrink, Dr. Tracy Clark, in turn also revealed her theme song, Tracy (surprise, surprise!) by The Cuff Links, and danced to the beat.

Ally’s first choice for the theme song was in fact the song that put the show on everyone’s lips at the sound of the strumming guitar intro. Searchin’ My Soul and Ally McBeal were synonymous. The lyrics did in fact, reflect the life of Ally as we saw in every episode: confused but in desperate need to ‘find her way back home’.

But enough about Ms. McBeal. Her crazy shrink did make some sense at least, to have a theme song that could boost your ego. However, most people have theme songs not to boost their already swelling self-esteem but to reflect themselves as individuals; a song that expresses one’s character and being. Which was exactly what Ally did.

How does one go about picking a theme song? The ‘picking’ process is really a very subjective matter. There’s picking based on your favourite singer, favourite song, favourite music arrangement, favourite genre and other favourites. The most common method of picking your song of course is by the lyrics and overall meaning of the track. It’s not easy to think of a song at the top of your head, and it’s more of a gradual liking toward a song which you really feel.

No, song picking is not as complicated or profound as it sounds, but it does bear a lot of meaning to an individual, so choose wisely. To help you shorten your song choosing to make way for other more pressing matters, get online! Get connected, where there are quizzes and surveys to help you pick your song. Tickle has a test of just 21 questions which can help you determine the song that best describes you. If you’re partial towards having personalized goods and custom-made products, theme songs can be custom-made too! Custom Serenade offers to write the tune to your very own song, for a small fee of course.

Since the theme song craze has been around for some time, many people have already had their theme songs and apply it to their lives. It can be rather uplifting, to have a song to sum up an identity, which may even help you through the rough times. Quite therapeutic, I might add. So Dr. Clark did undergo some training after all.

With a theme song sorted out, share it with the rest of the world, where people are always ready to hear what you have to say. Just Google ‘Theme Song’ and voila, a whole list of forums appear, in deep discussion of theme songs. Just as interesting as it is to pick your song, it is as fascinating to learn more about the theme songs of others and their reasons for picking it.

I gave in and took the Tickle test, because my head was only filled with a mixture of classical instrumental music, and teeny bopper, bubble gum tunes. How does that reflect me? Don’t answer that. The test evaluated that Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves is my theme song. Right.

  1. New York State of mind would be my theme song because I always remember where I come from no matter who I’m with or where I go. It also brings back memories of summer nights spent in my backyard with my family because Billy Joel has always been one of my father’s favorite singers.
