What is wrong with being you?

By: Amelia Tan

Death is as sure for that which is born, as birth is for that which is dead.

- Bhagavad Gita

What it simply means is – we all die. As morbid as that sounds, it is the only certainty that life provides us. From the moment we were born, we were all bound for death. It is uncontrollable. It is inevitable.

Now that I got you thinking about death, let me steer you to another thought. In the face of death, everyone is equal. Yes, every living being will eventually pass on. The girl with the perfect smile, the most popular guy in class, the colleague with that killer body, heck, even Jessica Alba. No one is superior and no one is exempted from death (unless you salvaged what’s left of the Philosopher’s Stone).

Now I have good news for you. Death is unpredictable. It does not discriminate. The popular girl does not live longer just because she’s popular and the pimply face guy does not die earlier because he has pimples. The bottom-line is, life is short and we will never know what tomorrow might bring. Yet many of us spend most of our lives being uncontented with ourselves because we let society dictate what is beautiful and what is cool. And when we don’t fit the description, we feel inferior and self conscious. You can’t be fat (oh God forbid!) because it makes you a laughing stock. You can’t talk about Shakespeare because then your friends will call you a nerd. So you try to change the way you look by putting on that 3-inch heels that secretly makes you feel a circus act, and you pretend to appreciate Chris Daughtry’s latest single even though deep down you’re part of the Soul Patrol (Taylor Hicks). All for what? Just so we can fit in.

But why let society dictate what you should or should not do? Why betray the very essence of our being? Why conform just to be one of the billions when you can stand alone, a unique individual. We owe it to ourselves to do what we want. We owe it to ourselves to live our lives to the fullest. We are who we are. It is our individuality that makes us human. Everyone is different. So what is wrong with being you?

Why be afraid to swim just because you’re a bit on the flabby side? Why be embarrassed to eat that Whooper Burger just because all your friends are stick thin? Why pretend to support George Bush when you actually think he’s Texan dimwit? Why hide from the whole world when you have a pimple on your nose?

It’s really about time we stand up for ourselves. Is loving and accepting ourselves as an individual so hard to do? We don’t have to please society. We are responsible for our lives and our lives alone. We should be in control, not society.

I realized a few years ago that it’s okay to be me. It’s okay to have flaws. It’s okay to be human. I know that I want to be in control of every aspect of my life because I don’t want to leave this world with regret. And I won’t. Because I have a list of things to do before I die and I’m determine to do everything in that list. Just so I can tick The Grim Ripper off by greeting him with a huge smile while stretching my arms wide shouting “Take me!”.

Live life with no regrets. Carpe Diem! Seize the day!
