Flea Markets-Are They Worth Checking Out?

It’s known that in many parts of the world, some of the best fashion finds are made in flea markets. These may consist of second hand clothes, one-offs made by aspiring designers and those by vendors who have travelled the world looking for unique pieces. A few years ago, flea markets were rare in KL. Recently however, there have been many credible ones sprouting up on weekends.

For trendy clothes, head to The Curve on Saturdays or Mont Kiara on Sundays. These are usually open from 11am to 6 pm. Both of these had some delightful pieces at affordable prices. Other places to look for great items are certain charity or cultural bazaars that are occasionally held. These usually have stalls that are set up for a short time that sell various things. Weekend newspapers advertise these and are definitely worth a visit.

Here are some of the best and worst things about shopping at a flea market.

Best Bits:

1) Great BargainsAs there isn’t much overhead costs for vendors, they are more flexible about lowering prices. There’ll also be benefits like buying two items for less and such, which can’t happen in retail stores.

2) There are only a few pieces of each itemBusiness in flea markets is on a small scale, thus vendors usually only have one or two of the same piece. This is excellent as you can be assured that you won’t be bumping into someone else dressed alike.

3) Something new each weekVendors replenish their stock every week or fortnight so you’re bound to see something new the next time you come back.

4) More personal than mallsYou get to talk to the sellers and ask them any questions about the items. Striking up a conversation early also makes bargaining much easier later.

Worst Bits:

1) No changing roomsThere are no changing rooms though some do have a makeshift one nearby. However these are tiny and you’re sweating profusely by the time you make your decision. There are however mirrors at all clothes stalls. You might also want to wear an outfit that makes trying on clothes over it easy.

2) Timing and luckUnlike malls where there is a storeroom to re-stock, vendors at flea markets do not have space for this. Thus, if you’re unlucky the best ones may have already been snapped up. Try and go early to snag the best ones.

3) Pain to bargainYou have to be patient enough to bargain. Prices are usually marked up by 30%. However some vendors may be rude and that might turn you off.

Overall, flea markets in KL are definitely starting to give retail outlets competition. If you are game for an alternative to malls, you should definitely check one out this weekend.
