DeepaRaya Bargains
Malaysia is abuzz with preparations for Hari Raya and Deepavali that happen to fall next month, within days of each other. Bazaars are being set up all over, selling food, traditional outfits and accessories for the festivals. This is the perfect time to indulge in some ethnic fashion. Every year, designers will incorporate some form of ethnic touch to their collection. Why don’t you do the same? Here are some ways to work the ethnic trends.
Deepavali Bazaars: Things to look out for
Kurti tops
These are traditional cotton tops that are often worn over trousers. They’re loose and usually have delicate embroidery on them. These comfortable tops can be worn over skinny jeans and with big hoops for the ultimate boho look. You can also turn them into stylish mini dresses. Find one that reaches mid-thigh. Cinch a belt over the waist or hung loosely on the hips for your own sexy mini.
Lenga skirts
These will be everywhere. They are elaborate flared skirts that usually come with a short top. However, these beautiful skirts are extremely versatile. For a twist to eveningwear, pair them with a tube or simple off shoulder top to create a stunning formal outfit. As they usually come with a scarf, you can have these scarves tailor made into your desired top. You can also pin the scarf into a top for an emergency gala. The colours and embroidery will make you feel absolutely regal.
Accessories
Head over to the shops in Brickfields for unique jewellery. You will be spoilt for choice with the array of bangles, earrings and necklaces. These are always in fashion and can be used to jazz up your basic jeans and tee combo or as centre pieces with more formal wear.

Batik
There will be beautiful Batik material everywhere. With them, you can create your very own Tom Abang Saufi look. These gorgeous printed materials can be made into slinky dresses or kimono tops.
Scarves
These are usually paired with the traditional baju kurungs or kebayas. However, you might be able to buy them individually. These can come in a variety of material such as silk, chiffon or pashmina. Take advantage of bargains and invest in a few of these beautiful shawls. They can be used as wraps or to accessorize a plain outfit. Their eastern designs also make them perfect gifts for foreign friends.
Brooches
Most Malay women use them on their headscarves or on their kebayas. However, these beautifully crafted brooches with their coloured stones can be used to complement any suit or top. “Kerongsangs”, which are three brooches strung together with delicate chains, can be obtained at a bargain. Try buying a few of the same type and pin them around a plain belt. This will add glitter to your outfit and revive old faded belts.
