Question 1:
My face is quite angular and I have a good complexion except for some brown spots on my face. But my main problems are my eyes. I have dark shadows underneath them and wrinkles at the sides. How can I hide them with make up?
Melissa’s advice:
Well, you seem to have a very healthy self esteem and I’m glad! Good to find someone who is confident in themselves enough to know exactly what it is they want to improve but not be hung up about it. So, it’s dark shadow under the eyes you want to hide. Easy, just find a liquid foundation that matches your skin tone as close as possible; or even slightly darker depending on how dark the shadows are and apply it gently under your eyes with your finger tips in a patting motion. If a darker foundation color is required to cover your dark shadows, simply pat on a lighter color powder foundation over it to blend into the rest of your skin color. Another fab tip – dust on a peachy orange color, it serves to even out the shadows! You may also mix some concealer into your liquid foundation for more coverage and ease of application. This is always a better way unless your concealer is creamy enough to apply on its own with good spreadability. Avoid
applying too much lest your eyes look cakey and you end up having more lines which is what you want to avoid! Go easy on the powder, any powder, to minimize the appearance of wrinkles at the side of your eyes. Apply a little eye gel or cream before your makeup to minimize the lines and keep your eyes moisturized throughout the day. Be careful about your brown spots though. Take care to slap on your sun protector and be diligent in ensuring that your skin is moisturized to ensure maximum defense against UV rays. If not, your brown spots may worsen with age.
Question 2:
I am slightly olive skinned, what colors suit me best?
Melissa’s advice:
Most people will advise you to go with warm colors such as brown, orange and gold that will accentuate your features and give your beautiful olive skin a warm and radiant glow. But with the wide choice of colors, tones and textures of makeup nowadays, I say you can try any color as long as you have a smooth and even complexion! In fact, try blues and greens which care typically cold colors but make sure they’re bright and have some shimmer.Pinks and purples may be a bit tricky but then again.I say, just go out and try girl! Have fun and experiment!
Question 3:
I am very fair, but I have pigmentation on my cheekbones how can I hide them without looking like I have slapped on 2 inches of make-up. My skin also has a lot of open pores and blemishes.
Melissa’s advice:
You’re right about not wanting to look like a walking mask! So if you want to look natural, total coverage may not be achievable for flawless complexion in your case really does entail thick foundation coupled with the use of a good concealer. However, if your skin is soft and moisturized and if you can afford a really good quality foundation, it should fit real well and you will not look like you have thick makeup on. Choose a foundation or concealer color that is slightly darker than your skin tone in order to hide your pigmentation. Then dust on a lighter powder foundation to blend into your skin’s color. If you manage to find foundations or concealers that are thick enough to cover, then go ahead and just choose one that is close to your skin color.
As for the open pores, first and foremost, please do double cleansing everyday to ensure your pores are not clogged. An oil based cleanser will soften skin and dissolve foundation followed by a foam based cleanser to remove dirt, bacteria and dead cells to smoothen skinh. In order to smoothen them out using foundation, it’s all in the technique. Apply using a sponge or your finger tips in an upward motion and press it into your pores.
Question 4:
I am of Malay origin and my skin is quite dark. I always feel that my nose is rather flat , but my lips are full and my eyes are nice and big (people usually compliment me on them). hat colours and tricks would you advise so that I can enhance my look further. I have dark brown eyes.
Melissa’s advice:
My, many women will spend tones to have eyes as big as yours and lips as sexy as yours! You already score 2 out of 3 girl! So, play up your assets; I assure you people will be so mesmerized with your huge brown eyes and captivated by your full fresh lips to even bother about whether your nose is slightly flat! To play up big eyes, don’t forget your eyeliner for definition especially if you are applying eye shadow. If not, your eyes may end up looking puffy. Ensure you curl your eyelashes and apply mascara to open up your eyes. Also, make sure your eyebrows are neat and trimmed. As for lips, dab on the gloss and make sure the color around your lips is even. If you so desire, you may want to dab on a natural brown color from the inner corner of your eyebrow downwards and blend into the sides of your nose. Then, add a highlight on the bridge of your nose. Your nose should look slightly “higher” after this.
